We have a week on board a coaster, then two days to roam around before we have to head back home. Can anyone recommend a place to stay East of Rockland, or nearby?

We'll be returning to Rockland the Saturday after Labor Day and haven't really figured out what happens next. We'll have to start back for home on Monday morning, and have only one place I have to stop Saturday or Sunday and that's in Castine. Being east of Rockland gives us a chance to see things in either direction, I think.

We're not looking for a 'You can stay with us' invitation, just a quiet place that isn't going to cost me an appendage.

I highly recommend the Limerock Inn (http://www.limerockinn.com/) in Rockland.

I'll second Searsport. Quite an amazing collection of B&B's, if you're into that kind of thing. Convenient to where you'll be and where you're going, too... It's a good hour 45 from Rockland to Castine, with minimal traffic. Personally, I avoid Rt 1 in the summer like the plague, but between Labor Day and leaf-peeper season, it tends to be reasonably quiet.

Cripes Ed, is it still snowing in Massachusetts? :D

We haven't exactly planned the route home, and I've been keeping Phoenix in mind. But I have another mind, and she might be finished with boats by week's end. ;)

I really liked "Bah's Bake House" in Castine as a place to stay. It wasn't too expensive, and our small but nice room looked over the harbor. Plus it is over a really good little bakery, and they let guests have a bunch of different stuff in the morning. Nothing like waking up to the smell of a Maine Harbor and melting chocolate!

Rich-

These folks are both water and land activity oriented, and have set up a website that caters to the coastal traveller. They've identified things to do and places to stay in the area you are interested in. Certain hotels and inns have chosen to list themselves (for a fee), so there are descriptions of them or links to their websites here... but it's not a comprehensive list.

Enjoy your trip!

We didn't make turn off to Castine, but when you leave Castine, you absolutely MUST head south to Brooklin and the Wooden Boat School. There's Wooden Boat Publication signs beforehand, but it's a left turn off of Hwy 175 at the Brooklin General Store.

Stop in to the new building, buy a few things from the WB store, and ask for Scot :D

Next check out the school and then head down to the waterfront. From there, proceed back up the road (stop at the Brooklin General Store and if the blueberry muffins are out (made with fresh local blueberries), buy all they have. Take a left at the store and proceed to the next corner and go left. That'll dump you into the Brooklin Boat Yard and their anchorage. If you haven't had your fill of beautiful wooden boats by then, well...you just can't be helped... ;)

I've got 200+ pictures on the camera, but am currently in a battle of wits with the software

In addition to Joyant that rgbarr mentioned, there was one sweet little thing - about 20' & varnished from stem to sten - that I think you'd really like. I hope someone got some shots of her and Arapaho side by side. I couldn't resist looking at Dave and saying, "Honey, I shrunk the boat." Anyway, it's on a mooring at the Brooklin Boat Yard.

This is getting better by the day. Think I'll troll the streets wearing a WBF sticker. :D

Hugh, Jeff, Searsport was my first choice too.

We will see Castine, that much I know.

Cool site rbgarr, I'll put it to paper at work (high bandwidth lines). I thought I'd done some homework, got more to do.

JohnB - same with the 30 square photos, I'll haul them in during lunch tomorrow.

Margo - I really want to head down to Brooklin and WB, but Deb isn't keen on it. 'We saw it before' she says. But that was right after they bought it and there wasn't much paint on it from what I remember. I have a photo that I'd post to let you compare, but my machine is quickly dying and can't see my scanner anymore. The jury's out, but how can we go to Maine and not see WB again? Thing I remember most was Mr. Wilson meeting us inside the entrance. smile.gif

Ed ? Should I bring tools just in case?

Margo- Weren't those blueberry muffins the BEST!! On Friday night after the Camden start, I slept in the back of my Exploder at the Sedgwick boat launch and had to get up at 0430 to use the ramp before the tide was too far out. Then I went over to the Brooklin General Store, which opens at five, for those muffins and coffee. I ended up buying a second one which I savored on the way out to the starting line when I was towing JOYANT later that day. So tasty. This week we are going to get two 20 pound flats of blueberries at a place in Hope. Putting up jam and enjoying pies, muffins , etc. is a late summer tradition which kind of signals the oncoming rush of school days.

How did the rest of the weekend at ERR go. Did the RC shorten the Saturday race and did anyone finish? Was there another race on Sunday? Were the trophies awarded by drawing names out of a hat like they said they might do? I apologize again for missing you at the Camden Yacht Club. My friend from sailing instructor days flagged me down at about a quarter to ten and asked for a ride around the harbor. I think I took him back to the dock at about 10:30. You must have come and gone in that interim, unless I just didn't see or hear you on the club lawn.

I took about two rolls of 35mm at the ERR, and the prints come in tomorrow. When I get them back I'm going to attempt my first scanning/Imagestation download. There's at least one of ARAPAHO in there, but I didn't see the liitle brightwork boat you mentioned.

rgbarr - one of those blueberry muffins while towing Joyant that is criminally decadant ;)

More later - I'm at work, and folks here seem to think I should be doing just that   (and I've got a bill or two to pay... so must oblige)
