Will be making a business/pleasure trip to Savannah this week (Thurs - Sunday). Any recommendations on boat-related sites to see or local restaurants to check out? By the way (although I am building plywood boat now), I have never seen a real, plank-on-frame built boat, in person. So if anyone knows where one can be seen (and touched???) in the Savannah area, I'd sure like to hear about it.

Shane if you make it over here as far as Savannah and don't check in with me I will kick your Aussie butt back to the bush. Ron, there is always Palmer-Johnson. Don't know how many woodies they have though.

OK, a subject I know about. I grew up in Savannah, came to Atlanta to go to Ga Tech. My oldest daughter now lives there. Are you bringing your wife: if yes you'll be doing downtown as well. The Hampton downtown is a very good place, good location. The Heart of Savannah, is a good place, old but always updated, good location. My pick downtown since I'll be out amoungst them, not in the room.

Eating- Most highly rated - Elisabeths on 37 st. Overrated in my book. Best white table cloth- The pink House. I like the evrything about the Chart House downtown on the river. The Six Penny Pub is great too for lunch.
Tubby's in Thunderbolt, you can see Palmer Johnsons gold platers.
Not to be missed THE CRAB SHACK on Tybee waterfront boiled not fried every thing under the oaks, at a fishing marina.

I'd rent bikes and do the 40 odd squares.
I'd rent kayaks or a Carolina skiff at the Isle of Hope Marina and do the Skidaway river.
I'd rent kayaks at Tybee and do Lazeretto Creek, Cockspur Island and North Beach. There will be dolphins here.

Riverwalk downtown is very good- Spanky's is the night spot. Huey's for a great lunch. Tubby's (the downtown, riverwalk location for drinks and music.
There will be lots of tugboats, riverboats( sorta) and some yachts to see here. Big as the yachts are, the owners are in the hotels-go figure.

Savannah Bend Marina for sandwichs, chili and beer- shooting pool while the boats slide by.

Williams Seafood(since the 40's) on the way to or from the beach. The old folks are buried now so the kids serve beer and have a great bar built like the back of a sportsfisherman, complete with fighting chairs. Its called the Bridgetender- 'cause that's what Mr. Williams was when Mrs. Williams sold crabcakes on the side of the road.

Doc's is the bar at Tybee- whole place sorta lost in time cause all the money went to and spoiled Hilton Head. The Ocean Plaza has a great second story bar and rastaurant with view- The Beach Grill has beeter food , smae location.
North Beach Grill is Jamacian - great joint.
Goerge's is the same owners newer, upscale place.

Bye for now.

Oh yeah, Ships of the Sea Museum. They have a plank on frame ships boat in the courtyard. Models inside if you want to pay admission. City Market has lots of great restaurants. Lady and Sons, Garibaldi's recommended by me. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House is now just for meals- been on Jones Street longer than I've been on the earth. Yeah, the tourists have discovered it and its not just lawyers, bankers, and longshoremen like when I was a teenager downtown Saturdays buying records and band equipment across the street but still real good, family style pass the vegatables please eating.

We were threre last thursday. It was rainy but we really enjoyed our day. Walked around the historic district all morning until the rain got the better of us, then a fabulous lunch at BLUE SAVANNAH in City Market. Spent the afternoon on the SHIPS OF THE SEA MUSEUM. This was a must see! Rick

Shane, thanks for the tip on Tilton... will let you know how she "feels".

Buddy, what a wealth of info! and yes, will be taking my wife, so you've given us a lot to consider.

Will let you know how things went after we get back. Thanks again, guys!
