View Full Version : Looking for some sites around Lake Michigan!

The wife and I are taking a week or so in September and planing on a short get-a-way.
Since we live near St Louis, Lake of the Ozarks has been a stop for us in the past. Last we
were there (6 yrs ago) it was getting to touristy for us. Have heard it hasn't got any better.
Not taking the boat, so any boating would need to be a rental or charter.
This year I'd like to follow the Great River road from Alton IL up north aways and cut over
toward Chicago. There is a Japanese Garden up that way that we're planing on stopping by.
Like to see the Navy Pier, Sears Tower, etc. Having never seen the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is a must.
Looking for some advice on some sites & destination places along the lake. Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and southern Michigan are all close and doable. Nice scenery, good place to eat, maybe a quaint old bed and breakfast for the night, and little hike through the woods even.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You could stop at the lake front in Milwaukee
and see the schooner"Denise Sullivan(next to
the art museum).

Then a short cruise up the coast to Herrington
beach state park ,Very nice(big) sand beach
with lots of woods behind it and then another
short cruise to Port Washington Pretty little
harbor town with some nice B&B's.
Enjoy ...Leon

The schooner Denis Sullivan ties up at the municipal pier in Milwaukee, at the wet end of Michigan Ave. If she's in port, she offers afternoon and evening sails. Phone ahead for her schedule, 414 276 7700. There is no across-the-lake car ferry from Milwaukee.

If you have time and want to go farther North in Michigan, check out Traverse City. Beautiful area.

If you should happen to get anywhere near Lake Geneva WI look up the Melges Boat Works on the south side of the lake.

Boat rides for all tastes from Navy Pier, Chicago. Even if you just take the taxi boat from the Pier to the Museum Campus at the south end of Monroe Harbor. A magnificent view of the city.
Here's Windy - A reasonably priced outing.

Driving from the south, follow signs to McCormack Place, continue north past the new Soldier Field, Monroe Harbor to Navy Pier. Just past the pier entrance gate, take a right along the north side of the pier for parking.
Melges builds one design racing scows. very Popular on the inland lakes in the Midwest

Take the Chicago River architecture tour - you'll enjoy it and be on the water.

Bud Melges, of America Cup racing fame, also builds a sweet smaller version of the cup racers. Can't recall what he calls it. Was last there in '85 to renew old acquaintances. We went to high school together.

The wife and I went to Saugatuck for the first time this summer. It's a really pretty quaint little town. B & B's are really the only places to stay. There's a guy there that sells two hour boat rides into Lake Mich on a mint-condition Pearson Invicta. Much fun - highly recommend.

P.S. Tim H: The Mac races were 3 or 4 weeks ago, I think.
