John Welsford, a New Zealand designer of some renown, will be visiting central Texas in late September.

There is a "messabout" planned for Saturday September 25th at Canyon Lake - between San Antonio and Austin.

See this link on Duckworks for more complete info.

The following weekend John will be making a presentation at the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival in St. Michaels MD. But we get him for a day first!

Best,

Leo

Oops, the "secret" is out! ;)

He's also going to be in the UK soon after that! I don't recall if he's making any public apperances there or it's for other reasons.

Got an email from John:
... I'm available to the public at Fyne Boat Kits, Ferry Nab Rd, Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria (England of course) on Saturday the 9th,
I'd say from about 10am to 2pm if you'd like to put that up.

Incidentally, for the Swallows and Amazons fans, Fyne Boat Kits occupy the building that was once "Mr Walkers Boatyard" where the heroes of the Arthur Ransome books had their boats repaired one winter (Swallowdale is the book).

Yours, John Public, you have been warned! ;)

Just a note to remind Texas folks that John will be at Canyon Lake in just a bit more than 2 weeks - Saturday September 25th.

Best,

Leo

If you are in Central Texas, there will also be an informal messabout near Austin (the Bastrop area) two weeks before the Canyon Lake meet.

I will be launching a Ken Bassett designed Firefly sliding seat rowing boat at the North shore park on Lake Bastrop on September 12. I plan to get get there by 1:00 p.m.

Anybody that has an interest in boats is welcome to attend. If you've got a boat bring it with you. Folks that don't have a boat are welcome to come out too!

I'll be bringing my 13' catboat as well as the Firefly. Steve Lansdowne has said that he'll be coming out with his nifty MacGregor sailing canoe. Steve said that another fellow will be bringing an aluminum canoe based sailer. Another Austin builder will be bringing his Railbird Skiff.

Directions to the park are available on this website:

For those of you in far off states who have never visited the Austin area, no we're not nuts with all this talk of boats and such. In college I knew a guy from Texas and wondered why in the world any sane person would choose to live in such a dry, desolate place. Boy was I wrong about the geography! Ain't any west Texas desert within sight of my house, and if you fly in you can't see the houses for all the trees. And we've got plenty of water too, and some talented boat builders. We ain't Maine, but we're close!

Steve:

Is it possible, just possible that all the folks are attracted to Austin because of Hippie Hollow? ;) Or is that "secret" still around?

It's still there and going strong -- a county owned and run clothing optional park on a nice lake. Of course, some folks look better covered up!

I can tell you from our private emails, that it's one excited Kiwi that's going to be there! smile.gif The plane had best be leaving on time or John may just start out without them!! ;)

He's not much of a beer drinker, but he can talk your arm off about boats and tools! smile.gif
