As it happens, I can do no better than give you the substance of my reply to Ed. Yes indeed, spring is here in Cornwall, with primroses blooming in the lanes, and the weather warm enough to sit out in the garden. Easter weekend was great, three fine days out of four, which means that once again it is the BOATING season!

Naturally the tide was out rather than in, which meant that the mighty LULU could not glide into her natural element but was instead bonded firmly to the abundant mud at Sunny Corner. Nothing daunted, her intrepid crew spent their time scraping the toe-rail, sanding and varnishing the cabin sides, and replacing aged screws in the chain-plates with rather more sensible stainless bolts. The old girl seems to have come through the winter in pretty good shape, but has provided a perfect habitat for marine fauna and flora on her undersides. In other words, it's probably time to do some anti-fouling. Yesterday we took a trip in the car to St Anthony Head, and watched everyone else sailing in perfect conditions. It's good fun sitting up there with the binoculars, happily criticising their pathetic lack of sailing skill without actually being in the water at the same time and therefore immune from reciprocal criticism. Next weekend the tide is IN, so if the weather holds we may actually venture forth. Ah, the call of the sea . . .
