A man of great personal character and charm, true to his convictions, who kept his eye on his principal aims. Also a highly disciplined man who exercised vigorously every day.
Ted Kennedy, who was far from being Reagan's philosophical ally, nevertheless admired Reagan's strength and skill in negotiation.
One day, in a press of people in the Capitol, Kennedy literally ran into Reagan while walking by him. Reagan, at this point, was an old man, and Kennedy is no physical lightweight. Kennedy felt as though he had run into a wall, and later said "that guy's as tough on the outside as he is on the inside."
Many opposing partisans who got to know him came to love and respect him, though unchanged in their opposition to some of his policies.
He response to finding that he had Alzheimers was characteristically forthright and courageous. God bless him.
