We went canoeing today in the most isolated place. Isn't it great to hear the birds and watch the fish jump in 1 foot water that you just glide over effortlessly? Anyone else like to go where the crowds do not?

Pearl; Yes I certainly enjoy a paddle in some of the less traveled areas.
That's a fine lookin' canoe. What is it?

My canoe is an Old Town canoe. It is an Orca 16. It was built in 1962. Still needs some clean up but all the rib bands were good and she looks okay. She is really stable. We can go just about anywhere except maybe whitewater. I couldn't be more pleased with the way she handles. Do you have a canoe? Pearl

Pearl;
Yes, we are over canoed right now. Have three of them. One 18 ft. cedar stripper and two cedar and canvas 16 footers similar to your Old Town. One is definitely a Chestnut and the other one is supposed to be also, but has had some repair work done and I can't find any ID numbers, etc.
We much prefer the cedar and canvas canoes for ease of paddling but the stripper has them beat weight wise at around 55 lbs.
Your Old Town should be good for years to come. They were designed to be repaired and rebuilt when necessary.Beautiful craft.
Where were your pictures taken? The general area is fine if you don't want to give away your special spot.
All the best: Earl

We found the greatest spot- Hammock's Beach in Swansboro North Carolina. They have mapped out 2 canoe and kayak trails. It is challenging to find calm enough areas on the coast for canoeing but we like this spot alot. Looking forward to checking out some rivers soon too.

Where do you and yours canoe? Is your season really short? We can boat all year here which is wonderful. In fact it is better when it isn't so very hot. Happy paddling, Pearl

Pearl; Loads of places to paddle here in Nova. We have a big national park in the centre of the province with many canoe routes ranging from day paddles to multi-day backcountry trips. Here's a link to the park web site http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/parks/nova_scotia/kejimkujik_np/Kejimkujik_e.htm
Hope that works, it looks long.
We also have a fairly accessable coastline but most who wenture very far alongshore are paddling kayaks. Lots of variation in the coast so canoing is possible.
We definitely have a season.May to October for most people but some push the limits. The lakes usually freeze over by Christmas and the ice stays 'till March or April.Building and repair time.
Take care;Earl

Absolutely awesome location! I had no idea. Gosh, it looks wonderful. I bookmarked it so maybe one day after I get my 3rd and last son through school the best bud (hubby) and I can actually make a trip there. It looks like right up my alley. Thanks for the link, Earl. Pearl

Pearl; Glad you enjoyed the site. The whole area is equally amazing. Hope you and your family can come for a visit one day.

Pearl and Reddog, both of your places look great for canoeing.

Pearl, is there any chance you could share your routes? We live a little north of you and would love to check out your find.

Andrew, we were next to Huggin's Island close to Swansboro. You go to Hammock's Beach park, pick up a canoe and kayak trail map and can go to Bear Island or to Huggin's Island. Really beautiful. We've been to both. The trails are interesting and the area unspoiled. Pearl

Hey, Lady!

Your hubby told me about your post... great looking trip! Reminds me of years ago when we floated down the Deschutes... didn't see anyone for a week. Then only a few years ago... same trip, people everywhere. Seems like just when you find a great spot, everyone else finds it too!!

Later,

Phil
