View Full Version : Puget Sounders, Time for a Toast
Jamie Hascall

Recent postings by Meerkat have shown how long it's been since there's been a meeting of the Puget Sound Elbow Bending Symposium. Now I feel there is truly an occasion worthy of a meeting. I for one would like to raise a toast to the memory of Darryl Jones, alias Dasboat, with those that knew him. A place and an open date are of course the difficult parts so all suggestions are appreciated. I'll start with a suggestion of the evening of Friday March 15th. Place is totally up for grabs. Let's see what we can come up with.

Irish Bars must be good for wakes! Dunno of one in particular though...
Excellent idea Jamie. How about Hale's Brewery on Leary Ave. between Ballard and Fremont. Or closer to you Jamie and on the water somewhere down along Shilshole? Jamie, what's the name of the place that used to be called the Foggy Bottom (maybe still is) on the main level of the old Windjammer Restaurant building? Perhaps those that are interested could state where they would be coming from, their preferences for time and place and we decide on a location that is more central to everyone. Saturday the 16th might be easier than the 15th for those that would be doing some driving. There's a great pub/restaurant on Bainbridge Island in Winslow over looking Eagle Harbor. Someone help me with the name from that side. A head count and reservations might be in order no matter where we decide on.

Hmmm...somewhere in Winslow would make it [more-or-less] convenient (or at least equally inconvenient) for the denizens of both Seattle and Port Townsend.
Here's a couple of other suggestions:
The Old Town. Nice pub in Ballard. Non-smoking. Good Food. Better beer -- Belgian beers a specialty.
Conor Byrne's in Ballard (across the street from the Old Town) wouldn't be bad, but they don't serve food, though they do serve up tasty Irish music Thursdays through Saturdays.
I would push for The Hilltop Ale House on Queen Anne hill. Great food, great beer. Non-smoking. TVs tuned to CBC (Canadian TV) for the Olympics. 'Tis a pity that its both small and busy.
Or maybe Reading Gaol on 65th Street in Ballard. Convenient to Doc Freeman's.
One other thought...McCormick's and Schmidt's has a place in the AGC building on Westlake (just a couple hundred yards from the Center for Wooden Boats). It's on the water at the south end of Lake Union.

I'd heard rumors of Mr Skiff's possible trip so I was kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Would people be interested in waiting until the end of the month or do some of us just want to do this twice? :D (This is beginning to sound like it could be a monthly thing.) I think Nicks suggestion of the Old Town and Rogers vote for Hales both sound like great spots. Of course I'm a little biased toward this end of town. I know that Art's coming from the eastside and Capt Jake would be up from the far south. I'm going to try to get Kermit in on this as he's been a participant before and hasn't been around much lately. He'd be coming from Whidbey. Let's see what people feel by Monday and then I'll make an arbitrary and capricious decision.

Jamie, please keep me informed of the dates and locations. I have not had the time to devote tothe 'forumite' thing as of late.
Please send e-mail,as I always check that. And yes, the far south, LOL :D , BTW, there is no such thing as the 'State of Seattle'. LOL ;)

No, it is a political thing (oh, gosh, did I say that?). Seems like most of the 'capital' improvements revolve around Seattle (remember SafeCo Field? Can't remeber how many millions of the tax payers dollars went into that). They also try to push 'their' liscenses (EMT, etc) over the State (when the State obviously has final say). Actually, if we expand this a bit, Seattle is the capital of the 'State of King County', oh I got my self started again! Dang. :D
Now you King Countyites, I will not bring any of this to the table! NO POLiTICS! smile.gif

That would be "Conch Republic"
The Upper Peninsula has frequently considered removing itself from Michigan and forming a new state called "Superior"

Mike and bill L., and Jamie and all,
Please keep me in the loop about when you are planning the next elbow bender. They *might* let me across the border again with me politics and all, but they probably *would* let you guys across. Actually, it's more likely visits from relatives than customs that would keep me at home. Is there an option of your "invading the detached limies?" That would be great!
I'm still travelling, so it will be a day or two yet until communication is normal again.

I'd sure be willing to wait for the end of the month - i'm curious to know what a custom skiff looks like ;)
Seriously, the more the merrier I always say. Maybe i'll have my boat plans to show off by then anyway.

Okay folks, that sounds like a quorum. I think Saturday the 30th sounds like the way to go. Shall we say 5:30 at the Hales Brewery on Leary Way? That should give folks from out of town a reasonable time to get home afterwards. The parking is easy there and it should be fairly easy for people to find. Any other thoughts and suggestions are welcome.
All in favor say aye.

Hey, Jamie!
I'm glad you are still the unofficial chair of The Society. We'd never get any business donw without you. Since I have to be in Friday Harbor on Friday--when else?--I'd vote for Saturday.
Geez. I just got into the once-more-newly-reformed-forum. Are there new rules? My head spins...

Saturday the 30th at Hales.... Sounds good!
Hales works for me also. I called over there just a few minutes ago and inquired about reserving a table or two in the pub/bar area, I was told that it is basically first come first serve for seating in that section. However, we could reserve a table or two in their restaurant/family section if we wanted to. I vote for some of us getting there a little early and staking out our territory in the bar section (I'll volunteer for that duty, yes it's a tough job but somebody has to do it). They've got a couple large round tables that might do the trick. The leather couches are a nice way to go too. Let's try to assemble a head count over the next week or so in order to get a feel for what we need in the way of seating. Jamie, since you are the official activities coordinator of this event feel free give me a call or drop me a line if you would like any help bird dogging this get together.

Yikes Custom - you look like a cross between RuPaul and a Walruss - or a tired old hooker with an otter in her bosum! (poor otter!). I think there's roadkill in there somewhere too! ;)
Haircut? Is this one of those uptown snooty couth kinds of places? Hmmm....
If one of you would be so kind as to indicate the general (or even specific) location of this venue, i'd be obliged - not to mention it would increase the likelihood of my timely arrival.
Everybody getting enough rain and wind today?

Ah this is the kind of party I love. Set a time and place and everyone else puts it together. Now I've got to start thinking about my wardrobe. Salty but sheik eh? Now if we could just pull some ladies into the occasion. (No offense Custom ;) ) Are you sure you can't make it Barbara? I know it's a long slog from Sydney but we'd love to have you. I'm sure those border guys would let you through. We really don't hate Canadians. Really!
Thanks to Nicolas for doing the directions and Roger for strategic reconnoitering.

Nice job on the assembly of information Nicholas. Concordia, don't you guys have some in-laws or out-laws of some kind in the PNW that you can come visit towards the end of the month? Margo, I bet you've been watching this thread and thinking about it. It would be nice to see a few more folks from other parts of the country if possible, even if they don't wear mink and spandex. Pictures are a good idea, I'm sure that at least one of us will have a digital camera on hand.

We want to be shiek going to the left coast. ;) Hey Skiff - I thought you where over on the Oly Peninnsula? (restraining myself from at least a thousand funny but rude 'n risque things to say)
What's a Beggett?
By all means, bring the pig - i'll bring the sauce. Anyone have a portable BBQ?

Hehe - and I though *I* lurked around here too much!
I see that Hale's is in Ballard. Better get my passport updated - and does anyone know if you can still bribe the boarder guards with herring?
I guess the general location of El Skiff is to remain a mystery - i'll survive smile.gif

I think the venue should be moved to the Spar Pole Tavern in Darrington. Skiff and Begget would feel right at home in the Big Drizzle's Tarheel enclave. Don't worry about the hair, nothing a chainsaw scalping won't fix.
welllllll I did get kicked out of a gay and lesbian charch the last time I was in seattle...so I'm not sure if a gal chasing type guy such as myself would fit in at those west coast tarverns inwhich you seem tobe so fond of....
me thinks the red dye might clog up the the chain, so the chainsaw would be a useless weapon against the hair do.

OK...the fix is in.
I dug the GPS out of the locker it lives in and fired it up. Set a waypoint for Hales Brewpub at 47N 39' 32.8" latitude, 122W 21' 53.6" longitude (NAD83) and navigate over here on the annointed day and hour.
BTW, the Viking Tavern in Ballard serves up mighty fine North Carolins style BBQ (chopped pork). I don't give compliments very often to BBQ up here in the North, but they do a good job of it. The sauce is right, too: no tomatoes, just vinegar, sugar and mustard the way the Maker intended.

Rodger - Thanks for the invite. I can only wish... It'll be at least next year before we can get that way. Someone will have to drink one for us this time!
Actually the family is in Vancover, WA. I flew into Seattle last time to partake at the Center for Wooden Boats and see a Concordia in Olympia. However, that being said, I seriously need a Hardwick's fix and surely Ivar's Salmon House has restocked by now ;)
