Sailed on the Rip Van Winkle out of Roundout Creek in Kingston,NY with 200 young and young at heart people of the Beulah Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, NY on a Gospel Cruise to celebrate the 'END of the SCHOOL YEAR'. What a Blast!
I did my Clown Thing as two friends did face painting while the young people sang and danced the night away, we cruised North on the Hudson past the Kingston Lighthouse, under the Rhincliff Bridge and past the Rip Van Winkle Bridge toward Albany...turned around just in time for the moon to rise.
Many of the inner city young people aboard, have never been on a boat nor have they ever experienced the Hudson River from the middle, they are used to fishing and picnicing along its shoreline.
We all had a ball! Spreading the fellowship and love to others, who may be different,is a wonderful feeling, we all have the same zest for life and this group was as well behaved as any I have ever entertained for. Cultural Differences were not evident, as we just had fun in a wholesome way!
What a way for these students to start their summer! The tradition in the Hudson Valley is to go to a keg party and get drunk, as a right of passage....I think that this church has started a New Tradition for at least 175 Kids!
My Motto is "Get High on Life" and I espouse that "We are ALL in the Same Boat and we sail on the Same Sea so why can't we be friends, You and Me?"!
We left NC on Wed am and headed up the Eastern Shore, as I headed north I wondered how many forumites I was passing on the road without knowing.
I rode up 13 & 113 on the Eastern Shore, to the Del. Mem. Bridge and then up the NJ TPK to Route 287 to Route 17 at Suffern to Route 6 (Long Mtn Road) to West Point then to Rt 9D to Cold Spring to have lunch with our own Joe CSOH and his lovely wife Lisa.
I was able to see how his progress on Dave is coming and I was truly impressed...he is taking his time and doing it right! (Our Joe?)
Continued North to Wappingers Falls to see Friends in my old hometown, and then stayed in Poughkeepsie at the Courtyard.
Did the tourist bit and did FDR, Vanderbilt Mansions and the Culinary Institute of America on the way to Kingston to board the Rip Van Winkle for the 4 hour cruise.
Another night in POK and then to the Big Alpple via the Taconic and the Sprain and the FDR Drive to W.32nd Street in Manhattan. My traveling companions had never been in NYC so I was their tour guide! until Sunday afternoon when we hoped to get out of Dodge via the Staten Island ferry, well I didn't realize that cars are no longer allowed (since 911) so we left the city via the Holland Tunnel after paying our respects at Ground Zero and headed back the way we came.
Home to NC at 3am on Monday intime for everyone to return to their real lives!
So here is my question...HOW MANY OF YOU WERE ALONG THE PATH ? I plan to come north to sail on Uncas in August so I want to know who I can stop and say hi to along the way!
How about planning an Elbow Bending Session at South Street Seaport, when UNCAS makes the crew switch????? Or City Island or wherever, Captain Jamie has designated.
Glad to be home but boy do I miss the hills in the Northeast and my Hudson River!
