At least a year ago there was a thread detailing some of the life and times of Spike Africa - self proclaimed President of the Pacific Ocean. Anyone know what happened to it?
I wrote an article about an old Kingston Lobster boat his son Kit built, and I'm looking for additional information on Spike as a sidebar to the boat's story.
Anything anyone can contribute would be most appreciated.
thanks
Stephen
Stephen...I found 3 threads in Misc. Non-boat for Spike Africa. Not much info, but Cleek and Fleming seem to know of him. Cleek mentioned him in two different threads, and spoke about a series of articles he wrote on rigging. Maybe send Cleek an email?

Yeah, I saw those threads as well. I started a thread between 1 and 3 years ago that had a ton of info on him and Sterling Hayden and Wanderbird and Voyager etc. But now I can't seem to find it. I'll give it a try here for a spell before I bother Bob at home.
anyone?

I did not know Spike just his son in a vicarious way as we both, along with a gazillion others, volunteered on the 'BIRD' way back when.
Then Cliff Neiderer mentioned later on that Kit had moved to Pt.Townsend it was about the same time as Miguel Winterburn and Ken Comstock were launching their boats from the old dairy barn out on Tomales Bay.
Those vessels were as of last fall in the same marina in Sausalito as our resident pirate, Gary Bergman.

Spike wrote a short series of articles on rigging and marlinspike seamanship (IIRC) for WB back around 1976-77. Here is a site that has a drawing of him: http://www.sausalito.net/bus/tjay/
And Seattle Weekly carried an article that referenced a great Spike Africa story:
