I just purchased my plans from b & b yacht design. the 22 foot princess cat ketch sharpie.
Very exciting.
I want the best plywood available in the world. Cost is not important.
availability in michigan would be nice.
So how about it?
What plywood should I build with?

Bruyzneel, Holland.

A cost-is-no-object plywood sharpie sort of sounds like an oxymoron. The answer above is right. If you have to ask how much... you can't afford it! When you find out... maybe cost WILL become an object. If not then, you can bet it will the first time you screw up a sheet! LOL

I hear sapele is nice. It is supposed to be stiffer, more attractive, and more durable than the okoume that most people seem to be using, although it is probably heavier. Try the following sources, both in MD but they ship:

its only a 22 foot sharpie. how many sheets of plywood can it need. compared to the value of my building time I would be a fool to use anything but the best. but seeing as this is my First build from scratch boat project, maybe I will get an extra sheet or two. Just in case.
Thanks for the info.

Compared to the stuff that most of us have grown-up with, labeled as plywood, the Bruynzeel stuff will blow your mind! It's just beautiful - all the way through. Save every scrap bigger than a square inch, Twenty years later, you'll still be using them for bits and pieces of other projects.

If you can't find a source for Bruynzeel, Harbor Sales markets an excellent BS1088, Lloyds of London approved sapele plywood made by Shelman. The grain is tight with very little splintering and hard, smooth surfaces. It has excellent bending characteristics and is a beautiful deep red when varnished. It weighs about 35 lbs / sheet vs. about 20 lbs/ sheet for 6 mm okoume. It costs about $95/ sheet for 6mm. You can order direct from Harbor Sales http://www.harborsales.net

or you can also get it from Sunburst Marine in Gaylord, MI (989-731-5491).

Bruynzeel can be obtained from the Maurice Condon Co., in White Plains, New York, or thereabouts.

If you put "Bruynzeel" into your search engine, you can go to the (Bruynzeel)Company's website.

Supercargo: I live in Tallahassee and have been looking for a source of marine plywoods. So far the closest I have found is "World Panel Products" in Riviera Beach, FL. 888 836-3379.

Seafarer Marine is great. 1800/771-8325 They're on the E coast of FL, but they ship.

Certainly any British standard 1088 (I think that is the standard number) plywood is a good plywood.

American PS1 and PS2 plywoods are also good. They have an associated engineering standard.

Australian structural plywoods are good also. They have the same properties in both directions.

There are no best plywoods. In the same price range I think the PS1 and PS2 are better than the BS 1088s.

Thanks for the great info. I think I will be going with the shelman. It looks like good stuff, and is available right here in Michigan.

Alan, my mother lives in Tallahassee, and we get down there several times a year visiting.
Are you building a boat?
I wouldn't mind checking it out next time im in town,
William
