After a week at Woodenboat School and before flying home from Boston, I plan to take daughter #3 down to Woods Hole, and then for a scheduled tour of the Coast Guard Academy. What is a realistic travel time from either Woods Hole or Boston to New London? I want to visit the USS Constitution in Boston. Can one actually go onboard? What's your favorite Irish bar in Boston? Thanks for all help.

Sawyer, Welcome to New England.

The time to travel from either Woods Hole or Boston to New London is about three hours, given summer tourist traffic. I live in New Hampshire and the travel time is also three hours, but it is a straight shot on the interstate.

See the web site address below:

Yes, you can go on board the Constitution.

I am not Irish, therefore can not answer your next question. Probably in South Boston.

When will you be at WoodenBoat School?

Abe, I'll be there the week of July 24th for the Coastal Navigation class. Thanks for your reply.

3 hours is probably about right, considering the potential traffic. If you time your travel just right, you could do it in 2. The only Irish bar that I've been to in Boston is the "Plough and Stars". A fine place to quaff a few ales. I assume that if you're going to New London, you'll also be going to Mystic... Newport is also right in the same general vicinity (Considering where you're coming from, and going to...).
Edited to add... If you stay around just a little longer, you could make the Lawn Tractor Polo tournament!

Whenever I cross the Cape Cod canal by car. I'll try to thread my way down to the canal, just to watch the parade of boats. It's a huge contrast. The land is kind of "honky tonk" the canal great.

I agree with Doug about Newport. Visit IYRS on Thames street, then eat at Gary's handy lunch.

Greetings from an Irish guy in Boston.

Favourite Irish pubs.....but there are so many.

OK if you're visiting ole Ironsides then just over the Charlestown bridge (North Washington st)beside the Fleet center (oops now called the TD Bank North Garden or just The Garden) there are a couple of options.

McGanns on Portland St is great and the food good.

Then there's the Grand Canal on canal st and o'Briens on the corner of Portland and Merrimac, closer to Quincy Market is the Green Dragon just off Union st.....the the list goes on and on....this might help

My favourite of all is The Littlest Bar, it's located on Province st (T stations Downtown crossing or State)
