I toil my life away at a govt issue steel desk at a tombstone post in Tennessee. But frequently my thoughts go back to a job offer a few years back- that I didn't take- maybe I should have. Let me tell you about it.

SWMBO and I were on Malta, doing the usual touristy things and naturally gravitating toward the harbour. We came upon a a spanking new dghajsa-say DY-SA- a maltese-built rowing wherry, not unlike a Venetian gondola. But more importantly, the builder was there earnestly applying yellow paint to her stem with his finger. His name was Freddie and he spoke a little English. Freddie built these beautiful boats in an old bomb bunker left over from the Brits when Malta was a naval base. He also made a little wine in the back of the shop- to which he promptly invited us to sample. Now Freddie made 5 different red wines- and of course, we had to try all 5 before we made our choice. But he didn't label any of the identical bottles. For a refill I had to taste all 5 wines again, before I found the exact same one. Delightful- we were in boatbuilder heaven discussing methods, materials, and wine. Freddie had heard of epoxy technology ans was anxious to acquire it for his shop- and I was thouroughly familiar it, and described its many applications. It was on maybe the third round of drinks- not counting all the tasting- Freddie makes me an offer that rings in my ears today. "You move to Malta, bring Gwendolyn, and we work like hell in the mornings building boats, and in the afternoon we drink wine", Ah........

Then the question is obvious. Why does your profile still say Murfreesboro (say mrfrbroh) Tn? ;) When will you update the profile? Or should I call Freddie and tell him about epoxies and their evils?

wow! you found a Dghaja- I actually got to row one of these things. The same Freddie and his brother took me and Gwen out for a little rowing. Forget most of what you know about rowing- and then do the rest backwards. You stand facing forwards, cross the 10' oars which themselves rotate on a single tholepin- a rope loop keeping them bearing on the pin. Now you catch water and push it forward as the power stroke. Push them arms length, rotate them scissor fashion for the next stroke. Its a little like trying to kill a cat in a barrel with a bat in each hand. Nevertheless, I persevered. A fresh breeze from across the harbour blew against us and we had rocks and shoals behind us. Freddie and his brother were chattering excitedly in Maltese by now- no doubt about the impending ruin of their boat on the rocks. It was time for me to get the technique right. And miraculously I did at the last moment. I even mastered the art of pivoting-one oar pushing the other pulling. The boat was saved, the Maltese chatter fell an octive or two, and I was in rowing heaven. I rowed the four of us around Grand Harbour for the next two hours, and we had the great advantage of looking up at the fortifcations of the Kights of Saint John- just the way the turks had when they attacked in the great siege of 1565.

That's the old-timers' way to row: standing up and facing forward.

It's much more practical for a working waterman.

That, and thole pins, were not an uncommon sight in New England harbors when I was a boy.
