I called Chuck tonight, as I've been doing every week or so since his accident. A person unknown to me answered the phone and, when I asked for Chuck put me thru an inquisition before telling me he was in intensive care.
No further information is available, at least from me.

Ed you will keep us informed of Chuck's condition won't you?
I don't wish to call and bother whomever is there with questions.
Seems like it might be best if just one person does the checking up and lets us all know via the Forums.

I have no news to report. I left a message at both phone numbers tonight.
A WBF member checked in with a local hospital, Calvert Memorial, but Chuck was not there.
I do have Chuck's home address, but I am not willing to put that out for public consumption. If/when I hear anything I will post it here.

Here's the latest inforrmation --
______
Well, Patient Information tells me that Chuck's direct number is 202-877-4519. I guess this means he's definitely on the mend.
Unfortunately, when I tried it I couldn't get the so-and-so to answer, so I hope that means he's out having a post-prandial perambulation or chatting up the nurses somewhere. smile.gif
______
We've got two threads running on this topic, but the other thread (in the Bilge) is the longer one, so perhaps we might stop adding to this one here, and instead post only to the Bilge thread (http://media5.hypernet.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=019641;p=2) from now on? (Only a suggestion, but I think that's what I'll be doing.)
_______
Edited to add: The hospital didn't tell me when I should or shouldn't call, but I need to have some care about when I ring because of the dramatic time zone difference. If others were thinking of calling too, it would be charitable to make due allowance the same way.

I just spoke to Chuck. He's sounding very tired.
"tired. Just hit me." "They haven't told me everything." "I'm just trying to stay straight."
Conversational, but not a conversationalist, if you get my meaning. He says his family is there - his brother just left. I told him I'd call him in a couple of days.

OK, just talked ***briefly***with Chuck at 12:30 PM Eastern Time,in the US and, he sounded VERY WEAK as one would expect after such an incident.
Still has his sense of humour though! I wished him well from me as well as all here.
My personal opinion....don't every body bother him at this time. Let's just leave it to Ed Harrow to keep us informed.
Asked him if he needed anything? His reply only if I had a supply of better looking nurses than they have back there! :D

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> :D :D :D :D
Chuck is scheduled to be moved to a Rehab. Center tomorrow, Monday, Nov 15..
In talking with a relative at his home it was suggested that any get well type gifts be send there rather than to the hospital or rehab. center.
If anybody wants his home address contact me off Forum, please?

O&O East, what SWIMPAL and I sent him was a nice fleece blanket.
Being Diabetic and with Heart Problems, to this uneducated old rummy, I fuggered that some way to keep warm in the extremities would be a good idea.

Glad to hear that he's on the mend.
If anything, I would imagine that Chuck needs to get rid of stuff!
Could somebody please persuade him to put his memoirs down on paper!! He has had a fascinating life; an electronics engineer; an artist; as a Cold Warrior; a boat builder; a three times solo circumnavigator!!! Also, what of the book he planned to write on celestial navigation?
What plans has he made to archive his thousands of photographs? I recall reading here, that he actually developed his own colour slide film aboard his boat during his voyages! It would be a terrible waste if they were to end up in boxes in some basement, never to be seen by an interested public again! Surely a maritime museum somewhere would be interested in his collection. Perhaps the sponsors of this Wooden Boat Forum might?
Anyway send him my best wishes for a speedy and uneventful recovery.

Chuck is home, sounds really great (but still has some work to be done, like three more roto-rooter jobs).
He had, I think it can be said, a difficult time, and was extremely fortunate in a number of respects. He doesn't expect to be here for the foreseeable future.

I've just been speaking to Chuck again. I can't say he's sounding fantastic, but he's not too bad. The drugs are keeping him dopey and he was dozing when I rang, but he sparked up and we talked for a bit. He's got a couple of nurses coming in daily -- one arrived to walk The Critter while we were talking -- and I gather he's being looked after pretty well. He told me that he's lost about 40 lbs, and although he's a big bloke (6'-3") I think that that's probably a rather good thing. He also said the medicos have told him it'll be another six or eight weeks yet before he can get out and about.
Looks like it's still going to be a while before I get those cold ones from him....
