ThankYOU. It's been there for a month but it'll be dropped soon and I suddenly thought......"I know what I meant to do."
Funny how sluggish the brain gets over winter ain't it. I've suddenly decided to rebuild the kitchen and haul the boat. That'll work!?LOL Spring is sprung ( nearly).
Ah well, jump in and hope for the best.Trust the swimming skills ,as it were.

Congratulations, John and Kirsty.
Some well-deserved coverage of the beautiful Waione.
Your postings here have brightened this website enormously in the dead dull days of our Northern winter, when you're out romping along in a good Southern summer breeze.

I love this line in the description: "she is 96 years old and in perfect condition, having never been restored". An economical use of words that packs a punch...
Looks wonderful!

I didn't write that did I?
I don't see her in perfect condition, in fact she's nearly workboat finish as far as I'm concerned. 20 years of maintenance including a full paint job every 1 or 2 seasons has left me with a comparitively loose( cynical even) idea of what's a good standard of finish. Still, I don't break down and cry everytime one of the kids drops a winch handle( they do, LOL kidding!)......... and we take her out and use her an awful lot.
This "restoration" word makes me a bit nervous .Which is why I tend to steer away from it. I've seen and read about people making a big fuss about their "restoration" when all they have really done is a paint job and a new hatch. On the other hand you get " restorations" where they use a hull to replace ribs and when they've done that, they use the ribs to replace the hull. How do you get the truth in a word with such a wide parameter?
This is what Waione has original. Her hull (refastened a few times no doubt). her deck, sheer clamp, beams carlins, stringers and floors( 1 of the floors has been replaced). I replaced the ends of 2 beams in about 1985.( collision damage from 1917.)
New things: several rigs with varying changes to spars over the years. she's on her 4 th cabin perhaps. 3 or 4 cockpit variations. I don't know how many interior changes.Nothing really left original. These boats had no ceiling so everything is open.
Things she will require: deck and hull work to varying degrees . My standard has changed over the years and there are things that annoy me more now than they did 19 or 15 or 10 years ago.
Perhaps she's due for a big restoration!!!
Anyway... that's why I say she is a maintained as opposed to restored boat. Reasonable?

So 17 years ago, you had to repair damage from 1917. With a boat that sturdy, you can call repair anything you want!

Nu Zilders, are born with a 'charge certificate', held tightly in their hands, so I'm told.
John B, since you race her, I always imagined that she was space-aged on the outside. 5 micron stuff. Does she win? What's max hull speed? Can she reach max hull speed?
Telling us that she has only servicable paint has punctured an illusion. :(
Warren.
ps, The date of the damage is interesting vrs the date of the full repair. Impounded pending the outcome of the protest. ;)

Being a dead keen man in my "youth"( lets say approximately 20 years ago) I was fascinated by all aspects of owning , working on and most importantly, sailing this old boat. I did a lot of reading at the museum and in one Issue of "the New Zealand Yachtsman" I read how in 1917 the WAIONE was damaged at her moorings on the port quarter by a steamer. The steamer was named I think... I forget,It's been a while. As I read that I went "ahhh". I've stripped the boat back to wood and found the history of that collision. It was enough to cause them to engrave some sections of plank in on the outer skin, and there is a patch inside ( she's 3 skin). There's a slight distortion in this area and the two deck beams come in right here as well. My informed supposition based on this knowledge is that the collision damaged planks and shocked the beam ends enough to disturb them and perhaps the bedding of the deck at this point. Then a slight leak from the deck over the years... and even Kauri and red lead couldn't hold that back.Pretty good though eh.
Speed. Reaching of course....she does 8 easy 8.5 a lot and 9 is difficult. That's on a 31 ft static waterline. The most we ever do surfing is about 11 or 12 and that is very uncommon. Next time someone tells you that counters don't work , put your thumb on your nose and waggle your fingers whilst saying those dumb Americas cup designers don't know anything do they.In the light she has 1000ft pushing a 31' wl, in 15 knots she has a 37'wl.
We didn't race last year but the year before we won the logan cup for classic yachts .Points prize it was.We got lucky with a light weather season and won the points by the greatest margin ever LOL. but we are ruined now. Our handicap means we have to cross the line ahead or very close behind significantly bigger boats( all bermudan). We can point with the bermudans in the light or the heavy but we go out the back door a bit in medium.
good fun eh. I'm getting excited about sailing her again . she comes out next week for the big go over. Our final winter race on the Lotus( glass 30 fter) this weekend. It's make or break time there( we are second on points)oooo the tension. My gut just churned thinking about it...LOL.
