OK, this probably belongs in non-boat-bilge, but it's too cute to pass up and it is about people and places. One of my "daily links" is Astronomy Picture of the Day, and today's link is a map of the planet, showing the world population. Click on the graphic for a much larger version of the graphic; white is <2 humans / sq KM, the bright purple is >500.

If you come upon this after today, you'll have to use the links to go backwards to find the map.

What we need is for Donn or one of the computercreative types to modify a world map with marks for all our home ports.

All ya gotta do is . . .

Makes Oz, and Alaska, look pretty good, doesn't it?

CUTE! I find it disgusting. Looks like cancer on the globe.
It has been reported that Daniel Boone, upon discovering that he had neighbors residing about 20 miles from his place, said; "It's time to move. It's getting too crowded around here."
It seems that the only places left on earth for a man who likes his solitude are either bitter cold, or blazing hot desert.
I could be a happy man if it wasn't for the crush of humanity. I'de be gone someplace remote right now if I didn't have family obligations. Frankly, I'm glad that I won't be around in another 20 years or so.

In a doco on what it's like to be a Tasmanian Australian (last night on TV), a person said, "we seem to have lived in isolation for so long that if someone enters your space, like, if we see a boat out on the water, you think what's that boat doing there, or you see someone at the other end of the beach, you think it's time to leave because it's crowded"

She said it tongue in cheek, but it's what isolation does to you.

Joe, we didn't forget to pay the power bill. It's just that we aren't afraid of the dark.

You forgot about one other kind of place where there is quite a bit of solitude to be found -- places where there's lots and lots of water and no land anywhere nearby! Get going on building that blue-water boat!

Actually, there are also many places in the high plains region of the USA where the population density is mighty thin as well. And while it can be hot there in the summer and cold in the winter it's not exactly the end of the planet as far as climate goes!

BTW: Here's the picture --

Hey, Shane:
Look up the Flat Earth Society. There you'll find comfort and agreement. I see you have your light on in southwestern Oz.
