View Full Version : Sunset over the Atlantic (from space)

This photo was taken via satellite, on a cloudless day.

Note how the lights are already on in Holland, Paris, and Barcelona, and how it's still daylight in London, Lisbon, and Madrid.

The sun is still shining on the Straight of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean Sea is already in darkness. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see the Azores Islands; below them to the right are the Madeira Islands; a bit below are the Canary Islands; and further south, close to the farthest western point of Africa, the Cape Verde Islands.

Note how huge the Sahara is and can be seen clearly both during daytime and nighttime.

To the left, on top, is Greenland, totally frozen.

Pretty impressive.

Stunning, beautiful...

Thanks for the post.

We've got a daughter on that little green island to the upper center left...

Now Ive always wanted a pic of sunrise on the east coast of Aussie while darkness is on the west... that would be so  ... but them buggars are awake before us and asleep before us... mmmm guess we have a longer day eh?... Flamin daylight savings!

Hmmm, I wonder what kind of image that is?! It looks like you can see features on the sea floor including the Mid-Atlantic ridge.

Beautiful, just beautiful...
I wonder if the lighter ocean color is the continental shelf. If so a deep ice age would make the Chunnel redundant as the sea retreated into the ice caps. Is the extensive lack of cloud cover rare?

OK, so it's a cleverly done composite. Here's another:

At least John was kind in not blasting me when he revealed the truth behind the image. I had no idea. In any case, it is beautiful, represents a realistic image and its creator should be praised for a magnificant job (be he a man or the Creator)

Oh, I agree it is a neat picture. Nothing to blast anyone about, it's a lovely illustration no matter its provenance. What happened was I was looking for something else in Snopes and ran across their article about this picture, that's all.
