Elizabeth the 1st.
Did any one catch preview of this series on the History channel last night ? Did you know she consulted an astrologer to determine the best day for her corronation ?
Looks like the intro to a great series.
JD
PS

Years ago, there was a BBC "Elizabeth R" series that ran on PBS in the States. It starred Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I.
An Oxonian history don thought it "unhistorical" because the costuming was somewhat more than authentic. Apparently, Elizabeth made appearances in court somewhat topless on occasion...
She is also alleged to have used white lead to whiten her complexion.

AlanThe don was A.L. Rowse; he wrote a biography of the Queen's astrologer, Doctor John Dee, which is scorned by serious historians. The use of white lead is not in doubt; the somewhat toplessness is pure fantasy. The reason for her heavy use of make up was that she survived (fortunately for very many of us) an attack of smallpox, which disfigured her complexion.
"Though I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, yet I have the heart and stomach of a Prince, and of a Prince of England too..." extract from her speech to the troops assembled to resist the Spanish Armada at Deptford.

Thank you, ACB.
I had no basis for questioning the costumes other than his comment, so I am happy to have this put right.
I think that the series was based on Antonia Fraser's book. The production was pretty well put together, and was widely watched.
Alan
I enjoyed the recent Cate Blanchett film, also, thogh I fancy that one was wider of the mark, historically, than the Glenda Jackson series - like you I fancy that it was based on Antonia Fraser's book.
Elizabeth 1 is definitely very high on my list of great women...maybe at the top of it!
Your father kills your mother when you are 3.
Your sister nearly kills you, when you are 16.
Despite this, you turn out not just normal, but downright sensible!

ACB, do you have a favourite biographer for Elizabeth I? I guess this is lazy scholarship - I should get some books and make up my own mind - but I thought I'd ask about your previous research. Where should a neophyte start?

Great Women? How about my wife? She's put up with me for all of these years! Even puts up with all of the time spent here! Helped me through the good and the bad. The sawdust and smelly finishes! Been there all the while! :D
How about yours? smile.gif

capt jake you did what I was gonna do!!
Thanks for the awesome thread which gives me the opportunity to do the following!! tongue.gif
The greatest woman I know have ever know and probably will ever know is my own sweet possumpoop!
Shes been puttin up with me and my ways for nigh on 20 years 19 of them as the missus, delivered and birthed me 8 healthy, happy hoons, experienced the heartwrench and agony of serious physical disability, shared the joys of life and given me the strongest support a man could ever need, want or ask for.
She puts up with my moods, my disappearances onto the computer, out to the shed, sitting up until all hours designing, redesigning and re-engineering everything from the house to the round yard at the station, to defining the many variations of boats Im gonna build... (Its a shamefull tendancy I have to reinvent the wheel... which I cant seem to break  )
She is able to tell at a glance what mood Im in, and act accordingly to keep the house in the calmest of seas. Shes held my hand through the long periods in hospital when life felt as though it had ebbed to its lowest, shes smiled at my stupid dumbass jokes, cryed at my poems, laughed, cryed, gasped and had nightmares over my attempts at writing stories for publishers. (Which keep getting knocked back by the way! :( )
She's the rock... Shes the beauty of the sea, the sky, the earth and stars all rolled into one small compact package... Shes my possumpoop and shes the greatest of the "Great Women.

Together
Together we walk down lifes long highway
Into an uncertain future,
Thinking of only being together
Sharing all as one single entity,
Until in our final days we drift
Off into the unknown, that is
Life beyond death... together forever

Guess I better check out the rest of the site before you edit it too much. :D What I saw looked great!
I'de post a photo of the missus, though she is 'photo-phobic'. Don't have a decent picure of her. Only her turning the other way! smile.gif Though she looks a lot like Brian C's post on the Bathroom reading thread. :D

Day(s) late, dollars short, when I saw this topic the first person in my mind was SWMTMH. Had to find a picture first - so Shane beat me to it. I can't say enough good about a woman who'd stand beside me for over 20 years.

Shane, if you don't like what you see there, then you're REALLY hard to please.
It's crossed my mind a few times that the smartest thing I've done so far was to ask my wife to marry me.
It's one of those decisions that lead me to believe that our instincts understand far more than our conscious logical faculties permit us to explain.

Many good biographies of Elizabeth 1; Christopher Hibbert is quite a good starting point; probably worth looking to see what Amazon stock.
