After the Africa, Sicily and Italy campaigns, only Dad and the fellow he was one day senior to had survived as pilots from the form-up of their troop transport command unit. As they flew on to India, all the pilots under their command were replacements. After a couple of months of the incredibly grueling and dangerous lurching about those mountains and jungles, both had points to rotate stateside but only one could go.

Dad won that game of five card draw and returned to be Executive Officer for the huge round the clock training operation that got pilots ready for DDay.

His brother in the air also survived the war and is my Godfather.

I'm most proud that both have made it to another Memorial Day clear-headed and maintaing the same mix of courage and caution that made the great pilots in war and peace.
