View Full Version : Random thoughts, Norm, Grana....

I was driving home last night moaning to myself about the weather and the fact that the boat has been on the mooring for a month and I still haven't picked up the sails from the loft. It has been a miserable spring.
I caught myself and realised that I had not a lot to complain about.
Someone said in the Grana string that May had been a bad month. It sure had.
I first logged on to the forum seven years ago. In those days I was Cedar Hill Boatworks. The forum was smaller but no less lively. Cleek, Norm, Ian, Scott Rosen, Doc Goeckel; does anyone know what happened to Doc? were all part of the mix. I found solace in the discussions, not mentioning at the time that my father had recently died, and I jumped into a couple of strings sort of on his behalf, knowing how he would have felt and would have taken a stand.
I have since lost the shop, along with my house in a not so pleasant divorce and could not bear to log back on with the name. Wyndham is the name of my boat which I got to keep. It was Dads boat and is very much his legacy to me. I can take some comfort knowing that although the shop is now in boxes and crates, four generations of tools stuffed away in a garage, that there are a couple of nice lapstrake dinks and a few dory skiffs, some rocking horses and wooden sleds for neices and nephews and kids that bear the imprint.
I had a couple of sidebars with Scott Rosen over the years and sort of half expected him to pull into the driveway some Saturday. I sent some scrap teak to a fellow in Ohio I think it was, because I figured that any one of you would have done the same, he couldn't find any and I had a scrap bin full.
Is there a point to all this? Yeah. I logged on last month and heard than Norm had left us. I read the Grana string and was heart broken for Ian and I realised what a diverse and marvelous crew the forum is, the outpouring of well wishes and offers of help are a quiet testament to this group and it's collective heart. I was struck at how puny my troubles are when weighed against the events of the last month.
Despite the recent misfortunes that have befallen this polyglot group lately I gotta tell you all, it feels really good to be back.

Aye, May has not been very pleasant in the Swamp either. Nothing that time and money can't fix. I got lots of time. :D Kids! What are you supposed to do with them?  ;)

Thank goodness, we all have our health. The grandkids are a treasure. Hard work, perseverance and this too will pass.

Thanks, Forum Folk! Y'all lift my spirits even in the darkest of times. I ran across some of Norm's Pearls yesterday. My eyes misted up at first. Then a small smile. Norm made us smile when he was with us and will continue to do for a long time.

Cheers!

Wayne

It does seem this has been a rough season for some of us. It's easy to become so wrapped up in our own troubles that we lose perspective, lose confidence and even lose interest in the things we cherish.

I went down to check "MELINDA" the other day, soon after reading of Ian's tragedy. It had been awhile. She secure, but somehow seems to look as lonely as I feel. I think its time to finaly cast off the dock lines again and blow the cobwebs off of us both... The varnish can wait.

Ack,

No. Boatbuilding is slipping over the horizon rapidly.

Art,

Amen, Brother!

Wyndham,

Please excuse my bad manners earlier. I am sorry to hear about your run of unfortunate events. Glad to have you back. I always appreciated you sharing your professional advice.

thanks Wyndham.
I've been feeling the same recently. I had a bit of a crisis call on my own boat this week... its been 40 50 and 60 knots . that one is OK so far but every time I think of boat, I think Grana, and how lucky I am right now. others too. I'm getting phone calls from forumite lurkers too. saying the same.
distressing.

Thanks Wayne. Judging from your other post you could use a pat on the back or two. Hang in there.

Doc,

Good news! Sounds like the weather is better than it has been here in the north east.
