...I spent a few hours at Holzbt's shop today. He needed an extra set of eyes to sight and mark the 14' skiff's waterline (I marked, he sighted, I have no idea how it worked, but it did). I took some scavanged pine from my old mantle, and he ript and cut it to size for some seed trays, and he set up an old portable table saw for me.
His 7 year old son was in tow, Easter vacation, and he was quite a show. He has several projects of his own in the shop, and a better collection of hand woodworking tools than I've ever had. He has planes and everything! He even has a steamed wood mobious(sp?) strip that fits over his head.
He got antsy as time went by, which is to be expected, and I asked him why he was in such a hurry. "Do you have a date?" I asked. "We're going to the surf shop when we're finished here." was his reply. You see, he has his eye on a $100+ wetsuit to wear surfing. Most of the morning was spent trying to convince Dad that it was a good expenditure. Dad's not buying it.
I have a couple of closeout, label removed wetsuits, including a very small woman's shortie, and I told him I'd look for it if he was interested. He looked up at me and said "What color is it?" I said it was free, and his Dad was busting a gut at the other end of the shop. I told him what color it was, and, alas, it wasn't the right color.
I love short visits with kids.
