Chris Coose and I are trying to plan a get-together or two but our phone calls have been passing each other like ships in the ...oh, nevermind. It looks like a party at Chris's on Friday night and one here on Saturday night. My wife and kids are going to be in New Jersey so I'll have the house to myself. Does anyone need a place to stay? Lots of extra beds. Chris has some extra room also.
Man, I really look forward to this show. 2-4 inches of snow forcast for tomorrow. This boatshow really lifts my spirits. :D

Would like to go to the Portland Show, and have a change to meet with some of you poster people.
Would be driving up from Pt. Judith, RI and would have room in my Explorer, if anyone needs a lift.
Don't have any hotel reservation yet, though, and would appreciate tips on low/no cost options, if any of you Mainers can offer guidance. Need space just for myself, and possibly for a Block Island sailing buddy who took in the show last year and says he would like to go again.

Do either Steve Bauer or Chris Coose still have
bunk space for Fri/Sat nights for Maine Boat
Show? Eager to attend and looking for housing plus chance to meet with WB "forumites".

HELP- I've got three large bags full of fire helmets and turnout coats that need to end up in Cherryfield, ME. I don't think I'll be able to attend the show but am hoping someone from on or near Long Island who is going might have room for this stuff. If I can get it to Maine my friend should be able to make a day trip south to pick it up. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roger

Roger;
I will be travelling from Va to home (New Hampshire)next Thursday night and then onto the Maine show Friday or Saturday. If no one else comes forward perhaps I can help. Space is a problem with me but if necessary I can find enough nooks and crannies. I am travelling with a Wrangler and a small pop up camper.
Hopefully someone else will have more space.
Please e-mail me your phone # so I can get back to you by cell phone next week.

Kevin,
Not only do we enjoy the best boat show in the world, we have authentic shops all along the coast where builders eek out livings building their dreams.
We have a supply of material which supports traditional building practice.
We have a bunch of schools that teach wood boat building.
We have a couple of spectacular museums that support the tradition.
We have a coast that attracts the use of every craft (except PWC's and hobies because the water is too cold).
Most everyboat yard has a couple of beauts and a couple of flower pots.
Wood boats are honored and revered.
Our forum sponsors like it in Maine.
The boat show at PYS is the celebration of the season to come and the traditions that got us here(which BTY includes craft built with FG planks).
The place is filled with the energy reflected by the boats and builders that show up there.
PS the food caterer is the best! Coffee and chili are to die for.

And right next door to the show is Hamilton Marine - a fantastic chandlery that caters to fisherman and recreational boaters. That's where I bought all the bronze screws, copper rivets, etc. for my Thistle. And where I'll buy the epoxy for my Eun Mara. :D
See you there!

imported_Steven Bauer
03-13-2003, 12:56 PM
Yes, if you don't spend too much time yakking with the builders. That's the difference between this show and the big plastic show at the Civic Center this weekend. The CC show has sales reps and finance officers from the big banks - the Boatbuilder's Show has the actual people who built the boats! It's usually pretty crowded in the morning and thins out a little in the afternoon.

I've attended this show the past two years and I'll be going up to Portland this year. I've also attended the "National Sailboat Show" in Annapolis a few times and the Portland show has it beat by a (nautical) mile, if you like wooden boats IMO.
The family will be spending a week in South West Harbor, ME in July and I will also be attending the boat show in Rockland. The family may not see me much as I roam the waterfront looking for wooden boats and builders and checking out the maritime museums. I'm sure looking forward to it.
And thanks Mainers for putting up with us tourists. I know the traffic gets a bit heavy in the summer, but we'll support the economy.

The Irish bar in the Old Port on Commercial Street is Ri Ra. The big red one by the Civic Center is the Brian Boru. And the other one is Molly's.

Mike,
Clearly, of the two times to come to Maine, summer is it.
I've got a sailing trip already planned where we could set off for one of the coastal islands, set up a camp. Sue could paint land and sea scapes and we could molest some game fish.

Acme 401,
The new Irish Pub just down Fore Street is called Bull Feeny's. It's about a year old and usually has pretty good music on Fridays and Saturdays for free. Very friendly in a prefabricated sort of way, with good pub grub. Plus it's smoke free. It's a great place.
Molly's changed hands recently and has a completely new vibe. The jury is still out. It's smoke free too.
Brian Boru is the closest thing I've ever seen to a real Irish pub in this country. Usually quite crowded, always very smokey, has great traditional music for free on Sunday afternoons. I enjoy the friendly attitude and music but have a minimal tolerance for tobacco, so usually take my money elsewheres.
There are any number of smoke free EBS locations in the Old Port within crawling distance of the boatbuilder's show.
Cheers,
Mark

Then on to North Yarmouth for a contra dance!! I need something to keep my mind occupied.

What a delight the show was, and what a particular delight hanging at Chris's for a bit Friday evening was, and dinner after - thanks again Karl.
Mary Ellen remarked that she'd not seen a bunch of guys hanging just sharing and not having ego get in the way. For my part, it was because there were people there with talents I so deeply envy. In general, as the talk drifted from boat building to sailing to waterfront conservation and development issues, it was clear that the reason was that we all really care. What a great time.
An aside - Hugh mentioned that he's been working up various gams through the museum. It would probably spoil the spontenaity of it all to record one, but just imagine being a fly on the wall for, say, the schooner captains' gam.
There was one strangly bad exhibit - a skiff builder from a state other than Maine. Even the 'good side' showed very poor plank lining and the bad side had a bow wave of starteling dimension. The plywood planking scarf were poorly done - looked like the wood slipped during cure - and the fastenings that held the planks snug at least during drying were puttied over screws.
Hmmm.
I wanted to go ask the guy what he was there, why anyone would spend over $3G for the thing, and why he even had a business card. Being a bit of a hacker myself, I'm pretty tolerant of work that's rough, but this was just plain over the top and would have earned at best 5 marshmellows as a junior high project.
The rest of the show was totally wonderful.

Ian-
Everyone is invited to be the bug of your choice on the wall at the schooner captains gam. The gams are recorded, too.
Check the Woodenboat calender for details: March 28, and April 11.
