View Full Version : Mississippi
Looks like I will be at Camp Shelby, MS this year between May 8 and May 22. This is a pretty laid back year (we wont even be bringing our launchers) and it looks like we will have the middle weekend off (May 15 & 16).
Looking to do something that weekend. Right now I've 2 options.
#1 Sit around barracks and drink beer
#2 Go to gulf and gamble
Looking for other options or suggestions.

Chad,
The news as of yesterday is that Shelby is going to be activated as a deployment base. People that normally train there are going to be going elsewhere. I do not know how that will or will not effect you.
To answer your question, I am 1 hour south of you. There is lots to do along the Gulf Coast. Look at the New Orleans thread for a recommendation I gave there. If you want to come this way, let me know

Gamble in which Gulf, Chad? ;)
Jack I just made a call and checked on that. Even though some units are being deployed through there we are still going there.
I would defintly like to hook up. I went to Gulfport one year and spent some time down there in the casino.

JackIf you haven't been, the show is located between two casino hotels. Isle of Capri and the other one. Name escapes me now.

If you like boats, maybe you like canoeing. The Okatoma River is about 20 minutes north of Hattiesburg at Seminary. There are several outfitters who will rent you a canoe then deliver and pick you up. Also the Black Creek (National Wild and Scenic River) which runs through the DeSoto Nat. Forest is just south of Shelby. Beautiful float, but flat water. Be prepared to paddle.
Enjoy your trip!
Dave
Dave I don't know for sure how much I like canoeing. I should be finished with my stripper before too much longer and maybe I can let you know. ;)
Course now I don't know what to do. Go to the show or go canoeing.

Do both. Okatoma is a day trip. It's been an eon since I was on that stream. Is the waterfall above or below Seminary? It's a hoot! Safe as can be. Or, you can have a ball rolling the boat.
The boat show is a day trip too. Actually, you could canoe on Saturday then scoot down to Biloxi before dark and take in the show on Sunday.

If you head south to the coast, the Walter Anderson Museum (http://www.walterandersonmuseum.org/) in Ocean Springs is worth a visit.
Don't worry--it's at least tangentially boat-related:
"He lived alone in a cottage on the Shearwater compound, and increased his visits to Horn Island, one of a group of barrier islands along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He would row the 12 miles in a small skiff, carrying minimal necessities and his art supplies. Anderson spent long periods of time on this uninhabited island over the last 18 years of his life. There he lived primitively, working in the open and sleeping under his boat, sometimes for weeks at a time. "

Chad you won't be too far from me either. If you want, come on up and we will run the hell outa the Diablo. We can eat BBQ and pick geetar to if you like. smile.gif
Mike I would love to come and visit, but alas part of my problem will be transportation. You see I will have to take a HMMWV down and wont have a personal vehicle. I can probably swing the gulf and maybe New Orleans, but that would be about the extent of it.

Howdy Venchka. Actually, according to the info I got with my entry packet they have moved the show to the east end of Pt Cadet down behind the Aquarium. Usta always be between the Isle of Capri and the Casino Magic. Might have moved due to problems the past couple of years with the wind being funneled between the two big buildings. Got REAL breezy!

Well there you go. Shows what happens when you assume. No worries. I can't be there. My daughter scheduled more grand kid stuff for the same weekend up in Tupelo. GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Well it looks like I won't be able to make it to the show. :( Seems we are not getting the middle weekend off, but rather getting the Tuesday/Wednsday of the last week off (May 18-19).
One of my buddies and myself are talking about heading down to Gulfport during those days and grabbing a hotel.
