Hi All,
I have a Jet 14" bandsaw w/Riser - and other accessories. And it has performed well.
However...
I'm thinking of upgrading to larger steel frame saw with a wider blade capacity and lower table. I will be needing a lot of 1/8" Mahogany veneer in 6-8 months (If I stay on schedule) and the little Jet may not be up to the task.
So far, the Laguna 14" is looking like the right one - Anyone have one of these?
Any opinions welcome on the big saws.
Thanks

I have the same bandsaw, without the riser block. I have cut a lot of 1/8 in mahogany veneer for a project that has not yet materialized. How thick are the planks you are going to be cutting? Mine were about 2 1/4 thick. The Jet saw did a great job. The key was making certain it was adjusted properly and the use of a Wood Slicer blade by Highland Hardware, this is the best blade I've ever used. I got a chance to try the Laguna at a woodworking show a few years back and it was a really fine piece of equipment. It cut 5 to 6" thick by 1/8 in veneers effortlessly. Much better that the Jet, but if the Jet will do the job, why spend the $.

Dale,
I will most likely be using 5-6" wide veneers.
The boat is a cold molded mahogany runabout. I haven't decided if I will spile the planks, to make them look even more realistic, or not. Spiling will certainly require wider veneers to start with.
The saw was at a show around here 2 years ago - but I wasn't interested back then...
I haven't tried the Highland blades - but the Timberwolf blades are excellent too..
There are no shows due around here for a long time. I've emailed laguna to see if there are local dealers.

Undoubtedly the Laguna is a better tool than the Jet but they have the same capacities. If your Jet is properly tuned, why would it not be adequate, especially if the thickness to be resawn is not greater than about 6"?
The main fault that I've seen in the far east saws is that the upper wheel mount and table trunions are made of base metal and won't take a lot of stress.
I agree about the Woodslicer blades but the Timberwolf blades are very good too and about half the price.

Hello Bob, I have used a dozen different bandsaws and I can tell you that if that Jet is properly tuned and balanced that it is very capable to do what you need. I have found that the best way to slice veneers is to clamp a guide, say a scrap of wood with a 1/4 radius at the point, parallel to the blade instead of using the fence. Then you can slightly correct your feed angle if/when the blade starts to wander due to grain runout or warping. Contrary to what I've heard, wide blades are not necessary and I sold a Hitachi piece of crap that used 2" wide blades and was designed for that purpose. Save your money.

First and foremost, if you want to buy a saw just to resaw veneers, get a resaw, not a bandsaw. BUT, you can buy the 1/8" veneers so cheap, why bother cutting them yourself?
If I was buying a new (used) bandsaw, I'd look for an Oliver, or a Yates American. I have a 20" Rockwell that does everything I ask it to, but I have to explain everything twice...
I wouldn't buy a new bandsaw.

Thanks for the input everyone..
Of course, the bigger saw would not only be used for veneers/resaw - it would also get used for non-boat building projects too. Turning, etc..
Part of my thought process is, the low (larger) table is much easier to use when feeding a long heavy hunk of wood through the blade. Plus the motor would be larger, etc...
I got the free ad/video from Laguna and it looks nice on tv smile.gif
Finally - if I could get 1/8" x 5-6" x 8' or longer mahogany veneers precut - I would most likely skip a new saw.
I haven't found a vendor for that yet.. Any ideas?
Thanks for the input - it's appreciated.

Bob, when you get that veneer cut how are you "gluing it down"?????. I have my mahogany veneer all cut ( 1/16" and 1/8) for a transom, cabin sides and side decks. I will be covering it with glass/epoxy/varnish so what is the most practical way of handling this. Don't say vacuum bag as I can't do that. Will contact cement hold up under all that "goo"? should I put it down with eoxy and give it a final roll with a "J" roller????? Regular waterproof glue??? Roger :)

Bob,
My dad has the exact same saw your looking at. I have never used the jet, but have used his laguna several times since he bought it (he's had it about a year and a half) and can tell you it's a wonderfull tool! He hasn't used it for boat building but, done lots' of other little/big projects with it and has never had a problem with the saw. he also started out with the video, was kind of cheesey but entertaining at the same time. i don't think you'll go wrong with that saw if you decide to do so.
Happy building,
Wingnut

Frameshop,
The way we are supposed to hold the veneers in place is to use staples, lots and lots of staples and epoxy it into place. Being careful not to leave voids, etc...
Contact cement will not work - heat alone would make the wood fall off...
Once the epoxy has cured, remove lots and lots of staples.
On my inner layers of veneer, I'll use 1/8" ply and staples. But for the finish layer - I may look into vacume bagging - but I'm not sure how to do it. I haven't done that thinking yet smile.gif
Lagua has pricing - see above.
I checked rec.woodworking, there was good info there. Most raved - good hardware, etc. Couple of usual flames you expect to hear..
Laguna has no showrooms, so they only do trade shows. I guess the pricing is very negotiable according to the posts.
Another nice factor - good dust collection - both the Jet and Delta have poor connections at best. FYI: The NEW Delta 14" (Chinese I believe) has nice dust collection - but the rest of the saw is ok...
Tool addictions are tough to kick.....
