Christmas is coming again, I would like some feedback about FRS radios, so many options to choose from. What say you all?

We have 4. One for everyone in the family. We get the most use out of them when skiing and trying to hook up with each other or with friends.
Get the ones that have 14 channels and 38 subchannels. The ones that just have 14 channels get too busy.
We have 3 different models from Motorola. I saw that Garmin has a gps radio where you can send your position to the person you are talking to. That would be real cool for hiking, mountainbiking, or woods skiing.
You can get the raidos cheap if you look around.

If you get different models, make sure that they can speak to each other.
A dry bag may be a good investment as well, though we get by with zip-locks.

FRS is kinda short-ranging. Get the GMRS units instead; there's more of a to-do about licensing, and a bit more cost, but the range is much greater. They can legally intra operate with the FRS units.

Anyone able to comment on the batery quality. Alkaline to Ni-Cad, weatherproofing, and general quality?

We have four, motorolas, good quality, used for skiing and boating. Battery life is pretty decent unless you're chatting all the time. My main complaint is that the range is suspect, pretty much a line of sight issue. So while they work great for boating, across open expanses, they don't work as well skiing where you may find yourself down in a hole with poor/no reception. If we were really serious about them, I'd look at some of the more powerful options.

Consider NiMH (Nickle metal hydride) rechargable batteries. I'm useing a 2000mAh and lesser ones in the FRS radios. the 2000 mAh battery will run the digital camers long enough to filll up a 64mb disk.

What Norm sez..use Nickel Metal Hydride batteries but be aware you needs a diff'rent charger...and the GMRS radios have a higher transmit output for longer range....

ionbarnes- I can comment on the waterproofing of one brand, Cobra. At the start of Hurricane Isabell we had four of them, one for each member of the family. Only one made it in working order. We kept them in the pockets of out foul weather jackets (good jackets, not cheap ones). Three of them were still ruined.
