I have the chance to pick up a used PM50. For once, the machine is actually close to me. My question: what is a fair price for a machine in good condition? The owner's asking "around" 4 bills. I have an 1950's era 6" craftsman with an open stand and a 3/4 hp motor, all of which works reasonably well. But I'm torn: I thought I'd upgrade, when I do, to an 8" machine. Not sure it makes sense to upgrade to a nicer 6" machine. Anyway, just wanted to get some opinions here before I make my decision. Fair price? And would you do it in my scenario? Thanks in advance.

That's a nice jointer but if I was doing OK with a 6" I already had, I'd hold out for an 8" myself.

I'm in the same boat. I have an old Boice Crane 6"... I'm holding out for an 8 inch... then I'm done.
Did you read the jointer report in FWW Garrett? I was surprised to see the Grizzly do EXTREMELY well. They have a new model with a nice layout for a very reasonable price. Unless I find a domestic 8" used... I'll be buying one of the chiwanese jointers... they're getting to be very good. ;)

Yes, I saw that report on the Grizzly 8". I was shocked, because FWW has never, to my knowledge, had good things to say about Grizzly. Thanks for the input, gentlemen. When logic must win out over emotion, sometimes reinforcement helps.

Parks has an ad in one of the fan-mags. Great name and if sheer tonage is any way to judge, it has to be a winner :D
I thought they went out of business

I have a Grizzly 8" jointer w/handwheel adjustment: bought it a few years ago. No problems with it at all.

Powermatic 50 Jointer
We have used them in our cabinet shop for thirty years and had no problem.
Ask if it has two blades or three blades.
Three gives you a better finish.
