Hi All.

I want to buy a book with an explanation of the racing rules of sailing, and was wondering which was recommended.

A couple of titles I've found online are:

Paul Elvstrom Explains the Racing Rules of Sailing : 2005-2008 Rules

Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing Through 2008 by Dave Perry

The Rules Book 2005-2008 by Eric Twiname

Any one of these standout?

Thanks.

Dan

The 2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing are current of course, for some sailors ... but not for all of them.

Unanimous for Perry? ... now that I've entered the box. Now we have to use terms like "reasonably unaninous."

To keep up to date and with excellent interpretations of the rules and the changes, I like Dave Dellenbaugh's 'Speed and Smarts'.'Speed and Smarts' addresses all of the subtlties and gives an excellent understanding of racing to boot.

This quadrenium has the least signifigant rule changes in many years according to Dellenbaugh. Most of the current changes are subtle word tweakings and to quote him, "most of the changes in the new rules will have no effect on 99% of your racing." I found the old rule changes didn't either.

BUT ... there is one rule change that I like, HUNTING. The anti-hunting rule 16.2 has been addressed, so "... a hunting we will go." Adding to the aggression when racing is a good look ... if you like racing as a blood sport.

I like how the new rule changes have dropped words like "always," "deliberately" and "safety" to now use terms like, "at the first reasonable opportunity." Nothing that involves losing a race is reasonable.

The "new twist on sculling" well I've found Rule 42.1.2. and 3 on Propulsion, open to much interpretation for a long time and find no need to change 'my' rules and thought on kinetic sailing. 42.3 "A boat may be rolled to facilitate steering." Yeah right! ... I always tweak the steering, so rock and roll.

I also like the new rule on protests, Rule 61.1 ... you don't have to hail or display a flag. This all adds to the after race surprise, for some. If you don't tell the offending Skippers, their witnesses might go home and when the RO posts a notice of protest ... just grab a beer and stand in front of it. You "don't have to hail or display ... " is well open to interpretation.

Have a good season, Skipper ... I hope this helps.

Warren.
