Hi All,
I'm reaching a point where I will need to get the SS rub rail fit so I can work on the sheer line of my project.
I started pricing it out and it varies wildly:
West Marine - $270 (316 SS)
West marine - $250 (316 SS) Different part#
Jamestown - $300 (316 SS)
Hamilton - $110 (No description)
All are 1" x 12' SS Solid back predrilled, I'll need qty 4.
Anyone know why they should very in price so much or if Hamiltons's SS is not good stuff?
Thanks for the help and suggestions
Bob

The Hamilton catalog sez their stock is 304 ss. Not as good as 316, but in 20 ft length they have 316 at $240.

And you won't like the look of 304 stainless. It looks too much like carbon steel. Go with 316.

Thanks for the info - that was going to be my follow on question. I Googled 304 vs. 316 last night and found out some info.. but the 316 certainly sounded better.
I'll go with the 316.
Thx.

Bob,
I have a hand radiused rubrail of Walnut that is just painted now on my 18 foot skiff. I wish I had left it flat for ease of installing rubrail protection. Anyway, the only thing I have found to use is the 1/2" wide half round stainless with predrilled holes. It only comes in 304 stainless so that will have to be my choice. Hamilton Marine seems to be my best pricing, but the TAco stuff from Boaters World is reasoable too. I could also use brass or aluminum but I think the stainless will be best.
I wish I could find a hard vinyl that would fit on the rounded surface of my rubrail.

Any particular reason you need solid stainless rather than the far less expensive hollow back? 1" hollow back is still pretty tough stuff and looks the same from the outside. Been using it for years and can see no reason to get the solid kind.

Tom,
The original plans call for the solid back stuff. I think it will lay down flatter. But other than that - no specific reason.
I'll take a look at the hollow back stuff to just to be sure I want to go with the solid stuff. Maybe Hamilton marine will have boat builders show special pricing.. I think they usually do..
thx.

E-mail Alaskan Copper and Brass. I don't see any half oval stainless steel on their website, but they do carry stuff that isn't listed, like half oval brass. Their prices are very good. http://www.alaskancopper.com/
