I have 1958 Cheoy Lee Frisco Flyer. I lost the teak spar wedges in an unfortunate submarine event. A friend recommended Spartec, but at $120 a shot, I am wondering if my $8 tubes of 5200 would not work just as well.

Spruce mast which goes through: bronze collar, plywood cabin top, block, and then stepped on top of 1959 silver quarter and keel.

I would think softwood replacement wedges would be a better answer. I'm surprised the old ones were teak. A softwood will swell up a bit more once wet. (In fact you might want to pre-soak 'em a little if you're at all worried about compression damage.) At any rate, I'd think you'd want the wedges to be as "soft" or softer than the mast itself? The 5200 would be awfully messy to apply, wouldn't give much, if any, "support" to the mast and would be pure hell to remove again next time you pull the rig. It'll probably leak anyway once it "works" a bit. (Pretty boat, by the way!)

Doesn't that look like a better dryer way to do it? I am tired of having a wet bunk. My wedges were custom made. The hole is at an angle and the mast is not round. So it is very difficult to make custom fit mast wedges.
I was going to make a dam, grease up the mast and hole with vaseline, and then put in the 5200. Much like the spartite system, but at 1/15 the price.

We had a Frisco Flyer when I was a young kid. Great boat. Thanks for the photos and the memories.

Hi Karl.
Someone must have lost your mast grommet before you lost the wedges.
This will fix your problem.
Make new wedges from softwood, all you need is a knife and some wood, then get a piece of rubber sheet and glue up a mast grommet (in place on the mast) like the one in the picture.

Good luck, Ola.

Nope. The mast wedges were perfectly carved
Teak. There was no room for any mast gromet.
I think the way Cheoy Lee made the wedges was to start with a solid piece of teak as large in diameter as the outside of the bronze hole collar. Then they must have machined the inside to the diameter of the mast. (Mast was round before I scarfed new spruce to fix cracks.) Then I think they shaved the lower portion to fit the deck hole, and leaving a perfectly matching collar which met the slanted bronze collar ring. Rounded the top, then cut it axially into six sectors with a thin curf saw. It was a puzzle to put together because all the pieces were not the same shape.
That's too much work for me, especially since the mast is now a little oval there. I'm going to try the 5200. Maybe post some pictures.
