Nice work. Could you tell me how your cockpit combing is constructed? What are the thickness/width of the wood? Is that a T in G joint?
thanks

Ever heard of "Gilding The Lily"?
Ditch the Rug.
Ever see what a house deck looks like after a year or so when an ***ouside carpet****has covered it?
That is out here with low hummadity during the summer months.
Imagine what it could be like back there with hummadity in the 70 or 90 percent range.

Ever heard of "Guilding The Lily"?Yup. You do see a lot of that 'round here.
Let the excellence of the design and its execution recommend your boat. Forget the useless doodads.

Ya know I'm kinda torn between the silly oriental carpet myself. But what the hell it was only $8 and it's not permanent. Phil is a little torn as well. But there are two things that are nice about it. One it fits perfectly. Two it is awfully comfy underfoot. It feels regal and adds a bit of hokey yachtyness wich is fun. So ya know what we can sail with it or toss it, it's not such a big deal.

Ok so it's easy enough to remove the silly rug.
Now ya see it

Nice, Joe. I think it looks better without the carpet.

You have a point about comfort regarding the rug, Joe. Particularly since that cockpit sole is pretty wide and can leave a feeling of unstability underfoot. If you want the look of something on the sole, perhaps you might consider working up a nice woven rope matt (check out Ashley's for options.) That would give much the same feeling underfoot and be a lot more in keeping with the yachty style of the boat.
Like this nice piece from Vince Brennan's post on fancywork in the Misc.Boat. section.

Note the engine box addition to the cockpit sole. It houses a marinised Toyota car motor( diesel). He can do 8 something under power with that thing in a 30/ 31 ft w/l boat.

Ummm , that is a nice spot to post from .The shot looking forward from the transom shows the rug is an interesting width , exactly covering the center 5 floor boards .How about using nonskid in the paint on those 5 boards instead , starting aft of the centerboard case , just as the rug does with a straight line athwartship , and terminating directly under the forward edge of the stern seat , with a similar curve as the seat. Forward ,where you kneel to duck into the cuddy , the boards would be left smooth to spare bare knees and clothing .Plus the crew seated there can brace against the centerboard case when under sail , so no problem .
That small area aft of the case would be taped off to apply the nonskid ; Could be you'd tint the grey paint a bare shade darker there so the crew would know exactly where it was .Maybe the slightly darker color would later also be applied to the 5 boards going aft from the nonskid surface ,to where they die against an aft bulkhead under the seat . Or , maybe a semicircular or elliptical curve would be used both fore and aft on the nonskid area to create a shape that suggests a large matt . I see that the curved interior edge of the side benches is cut off to flair straight to the cabin entrance .Maybe it would look good if the nonskid area left the aft corners of the centerboard case in a straight line perpendicular to the side benches final run .
I think a rug or matt would have to be mechanically fastened to the deck to serve as nonskid ( where they'll hold moisture against the paint as noted ) ,or stowed when underway which seems like a nuisance .It looks like the cockpit aft is wide enough for the inexperienced , especially kids ,to slid around a bit as they change sides when the boat tacks , or cling to the weather side , so maybe a bit of nonskid would add to the crew's comfort and confidence ?

Not a fan of the rug...If I want cush, I'll stay at home...My theory: less is more...did find seat cushions to be pleasant on the Virgin Islands cruise...
My concession to the modern world....
