I seem to be suffering from a brain cramp because I can't remember the name of the bronze decoration for the end of a wooden boom on a traditional boat. Usually a star. What I really want is a source. Sure would appreciate any help, this is driving me crazy.

We gave up the star mentality, and chose a skull for two years. It finally left one night during a gybe..Now we have a wooden carved iguana head to go on after next haulout...keeps the citizens smiling...

I've been thinking of screwing a star onto the end of Kelpie's 12 foot bowsprit, but then have qualms that this might be too "fancy." What have your choices been?

We've got stars on cannon tampions, and a few other things as well, but our bowsprit and jibboom are kinda busy...Our catheads have 'catheads' on them; I just rebuilt and remounted them in a 'box' made of purpleheart woood. They were getting quite beaten up in public events on assorted bad docks. Now perhaps they will stay nicer longer..old mount photo

. . . . . . besides looking pretty, what does a star on the end of a boom symbolize?

it looks purty....originally the spar was covered with a round plate to prevent water ingress to the end of the spar, stars were cut or cast in the plate as decoration. with the advent of better paints and sealants, the practice has been "dropped" in most circles...
