I'm soon to be the proud owner of a Penobscot 17, built by the Riverwrights Boatshop in Hartford,CT. They do a lot of good work with kids who have had some trouble. I'd like to know if anyone has had experience with putting an outboard on one. (That is the boat, not any of the kids.) I'm thinking about a Honda 2HP, which is nice and light, but am hesitating about whether that will be enough power.

Got one on my 1300 pound 15' x 7' MarshCat and she'll do 4.75 on the GPS. That's theoritical hullspeed for a displacement hull with a 14 foot waterline length, so I am PLEASED. One great, trouble free motor. I would recommend against buying the model with the centifugal clutch. Might be good for trolling on a light flat bottom fishing skiff, but very unhandy for a displacement boat needing on a partial throttle most of the time. At those partial throttle settings working againstvariable breeze or chop, the motor can be mushy and apply power capriciouslyalternating between the slipping of the drum clutch and a positive lockup with tha driveshaft.

Call Arch Davis for sure. Make sure the transom is sturdy enough. Also, ask Arch if you need a regular or long shaft outboard.

I have a 17 foot cedar strip canoe, I over built it considerably making it pretty heavy. I purchased a Cruise and carry 2.0. I think they make a 1.5 as well. Its super light, has a neutral, and fairly quiet and cost under $300.00 new. Here is a 1.5 on ebay

This motor pushes my heavy canoe along as fast as I need it to. The only time it lacks is when its pretty windy. I have outperformed my fathers canoe with his johnson 3 which hasnt a neutral.

I talked with Arch Davis before I posed the question to the forum. The transom is built to take an outboard with no problem. There are directions for a cut-out to take a short shaft, or you can put a long shaft on the transom as-is, or you can put a short shaft on a bracket(which is what I'm going to do). Arch doesn't consider himself expert on outboard power, and simply suggested it be no more than 5 horse.

I've mentioned in another thread I had a Sears Gamefisher 1.75 9 made by and available as a Tanaka) which was 2 stroke, aircooled, expsed exhaust pipe and had a friction drum clutch. After the decals were taken off, it was a plain black "seagull" old time looking affair which suited the look of my Cape Dory 14 gunter rig sailboat. It only weighed 19 pounds and had plenty of umpphh for that narrow slippery boat. It was noisy and high pitched, and even when run dry, after winter or many months of disuse, you could figure on taking off the carburetor bowl ( conevnt ti get to) and using a shot of Gumout to free the flost valve. Once or twice I had to reglue the leather tips on the friction clutch fingers ( a 45 minute deal) When the nipple on the intergal gas tank broke during a hose replacement, Seras had the part, some 12 years later, for $16. Occasionally I wire brushed flaking paint and rebrushed on black enamel to keep it looking good I paid$169 for it in 1984, and sold it as a going propositon with the boat in 2003. So now, some twenty years on, was it a good investment- hell yes. I think the Tanaka are better built( designed really) than the Cruise in Carry ones I have seen, but thay are very similar. The Tanaka came in a 3 horse as well.
But- the Honda is such a jewel- now I'd find a used one or the money to get another. I just wouldn't happy with less now I have been SPOILED.
