Anyone here have recommendations for a broad brimmed hat that doesn't cost a fortune? I need to replace the one I lost recently. Thanks.

hey Donn - got me one of those STP staws, looked good in cat., opened the box & out pops the hat with a pink leather & some stupid studs - didn't know if i should get my knife or fish for my heels. Anyway once it was off it looked ok & worth the $ for a little less sun.

Here is a canvas hat at 50% off. Not bad. Thanks for the tip, Don, but my head is too big for the straw hats.
Quaker Marine TransAt Hat (http://www.quakermarine.com/catalog_item_2110.asp)

Bill, can I get one of those hats in purple with a wide faux leopard skin band and a neon pink feather? I almost had a "brim" like that once.

Take a look on e bay under mens hats. You can find some never worn ones at times that are vintage for less than a new one.

I bought a broad brim hat for $18 at Eddie Bauer yesterday.

Seems like all of my one-design buddies have gone to long sleeved rash shirts and broad brim sailing hats these days. The sun is a killer (literally, I'm afraid).

I have always been one to sail in shorts and a tee shirt with no hat on, but I am starting to see the light. I've got my hat now, and a couple of technical sailing shirts on order. I normally don't like wearing hats (20 years of wearing baseball hats, I guess) but I'll try this and see.

I like the Ultimate hat, but it's price is right up there with the Tilley. I am now on my second, after the first self destructed in the laundry. I received a replacement for free when I turned the old one in at the sailboat show.

my tilley's just been trashed in the washing machine after 20 years of hard service. Guess I'll go down and see about my free replacement.

Nice hat, John (and Donn) -- although not as stylish as the purple one above. I reckon I could use that one for ice boat season, though.

The dive master on a "sailing" dive trip to the Bahamas this past spring wore a top hat. If he'd had a beard he could have passed for Capt. Ahab. But not all that much UV protection I'd guess. I was surprised at how well it stayed put in some breeze of wind.

These are just great...
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0000484901194a&navCount=4&podId=0000484&parentI d=cat21233&navAction=jump&cmCat=columbia_door&catalogCode=IF&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat21233&hasJS=true

I also have a Tilley, but these Columbia weigh nothing, great sun protection, cool, inexpensive.
My Dad and I both have one we use for fly fishing...really good...these are the Tilley alternative.

Con, my Patagonia river hat is sweat-stained, and has duct tape on the broken buckle (tried to swat a fly and missed!), so is unsuitable for mixed company, but it is still one of my favorite hats :D
