Anybody know anything about a 29ft 1963 "Cascade" sailboat? wieghs 8600lbs.
Friend is looking into one. Wants to know if it's worth buying.
I have the general specs, I'm looking more for "charecter" or opinions about it.
I will recomend getting a surveyor next time we talk.

as I recall....they were all (all Cascades) designed by competent designers....and at that time were all rather narrow beamed but well built hulls and decks for amateur finishing. They were sold as Kit boats....

Paladin is correct. Cascades are made in Washington (still in business) and were sold as kit boats or bare hulls.
The 29 is a good seaboat I'm told. The two I've seen had both made blue water passages in fine shape, one from the Pacific Northwest to Mexico, and the other from the west coast to Hawaii. Both owners were quite pleased with the boats, both were single men living aboard.
Of course since the boats were generally 'owner completed', a survey would be in order, but the FG work from the factory is par for the time....bulletproof and heavy.

the 29'cascade class sloop was designed by robert k. smith in portland oregon, october thru december 1961. they've been selling them ever since. the walls of my office are plastered with plans from yacht constructors 29'sloop. in the late 70's i met
al gwenner who had a 42' cascade he toght me sailing and a whole lot more. al and tom green who owned yacht constructors were both members of the rose city yacht club, which at the time was mostly made up of cascades. i don't think i ever heard a bad thing about cascade boats they are truely well built boats, you can't go wrong.

The only caveat that I'd add to the previous posts is that they often were owner finished boats. A friend has one and although I was very impressed with the hull and overall sturdiness of the craft, the job done on much of the structure of the cabin and things as critical as the winch bases left a great deal to be desired. It has put him into a real love-hate relationship with the boat. Make sure the fit and finish is well done and well thought out. If those factors work out well, the 29 is a good boat.
Good luck,
Jamie
