Tree mast, free for the taking. It is 40' long. Diameter is 9 1/4 inches, tapering to about 8 inches at the butt and 6 1/2 inches at the head. If I had to guess, I'd say it is Maine black spruce. It is checked but serviceable. There was a pocket of rot about 4 feet from the top, but I believe it was confined to that spot. It is located on Jamestown in Rhode Island. I have to get it out of the barn in the next 3 weeks or so.

Good luck with it, pics of the removal operation would be great.

Checks and knots? Describe some, please... and...would it offend to see it cut up into, say, 14' lengths to be carted in a pickup truck? And the diameter, the weight and the getting into said pickup? Because the intent here, if there will be one, would be to use the wood for mast building of a different sort: good strips for hollow mast building.

It would not offend me if you cut the mast to your own usable lenghts. I plan to cut it up into tiny pieces and dump it at the landfill if no one else needs it. Resawing it for future use is a better idea. As mentioned, the diameter is 9 1/4 inches tapering to 6 1/2 at the head and about 8 inches at the butt. The checks are checks...maybe 3/4 of an inch to an inch deep. There are small knots as it is a tree mast. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the thing weighs about 700 pounds. You are welcome to see it before deciding if you want it or not.
