Dave, how do I determine if my Boice Crane bandsaw is babbitt bearings? It was built in the '20s/'30s.

Dave, how do I determine if my Boice Crane bandsaw is babbitt bearings? It was built in the '20s/'30s.
Usually babbitt bearings have separate bearing caps with shims between the halves. As the bearings wear the shims may be removed and replaced with thinner shims if the man that poured the bearing didn't use a stack of very thin shims.

My big band saw from 1907 has babbitt bearings, glad to say they are in good shape. :D

I have redone several engines and misc. machinery with Babbitt bearings, and there are several “right” ways to do it.

Thanks for the reminder Dave smile.gif I've got myself a little ( up to 50 lb ) bronze foundry these days ...so I can cast the housings ,good idea !
