I have a BOSCH 5" random orbital sander of "hook and loop" 8 hole design. I'm trying to locate 40 grit paper for some heavy duty paint removal. Unfortunately, the coarsest I can find is 60 grit. I've checked out Jamestown, Sears, Home Depot without success. The only 36 - 40 grit discs are vaailable with adhesive backings or those designed for disc sanders. Any recommendations?

Porter-Cable makes 5-hole, 40 grit discs. Maybe you can use it on your 8-hole pad, or see if a 5-hole PC Pad will fit your Bosch.

A lot of small random orbit sanders don't do well with really coarse disks. The paper tends to stick in place and it's the sander which wiggles. This well may be the reason you're having trouble finding disks along with the fact that it takes rather heavy paper to hold chunks of big grit without them just popping off.

Marc, Norton Industries doe make a 5" 8 hole 40 grit disc. I'd do a "google" for abrasives and try to find a company that sells the Norton brand.

I did the search for you. Click here 36 grit 5" 8 hole Hook & Loop (http://www.abrasivesales.com/getprods.asp?cat=DT&full=Touchlock%20Discs) to see what I found at Abrasivesales.com (http://www.abrasivesales.com/default.asp). I get mine locally from Ecco-Abrasives but they don't have a website.

I've used 40 grit on my PC and I'll second what Todd says. They do work, but you'll find that they do tend to part company overly often.

Why would you want anything more coarse than 60 grit? That sounds like scraper territory to me.

I've been useing 25 grit on a flexible sanding board for what seems like an age now .It's like a rasp ,for stock removal ,not exactly surface prep , although I guess this is step one .

I had a similar problem. I couldn't find anything rougher than 80 grit locally, so I ended up cutting a 'disk' from a piece of heavy (60) grit paper and rubber cementing it to a worn-out piece of 80 grit (to get the hook&loop backing). That worked well. I do suspect that going much beyond 60 grit would make these little sanders stop doing their job and start 'jiggling'

I'm using 40 grit on my 6" PC, to remove 20 years of warehouse dirt and dings from the lumber I foraged (building a nice cold frame). So far the only separation I've had is when the edge of a knot caught the edge of the disk, it ripped the disk in half.
Of course, there's a heap more velcro on a 6" than a 5".

3M 40 grit, 5", 8 hole, hook & loop, #9148NA
Just used a bunch of it in scratching up my deck for stripping. Available at the 3M factory store, so it's in production (well, it's in distribution.)
