Good Grief! I wouldn't even let the kids eat breakfast on a beauty like that without a table cloth to protect it.
I want one. And a proper place to put it.

Gee, when i'm nodding off to sleep at night, i'm sometimes thinking of a bench that's maybe 30' long (for spars), has two or three vises (for trimming planks), Includes my otherwise useless old radial arm saw (strictly for rough cutoff), and is a general repository for stuff when i'm not doing the above. The sun shines brightly and the bluebirds sing, too. Alas, I haven't the space and I've got a job to do.

Oh God! Turn it off! My eyes!
That is too pretty. I'd probably spill paint on it within the first day of being in it's proximity. Sure is a looker.

And even if there were a place to build a boat the dude spends so much time cleaning up he would never finish. Besides he must be left handed. I couldn't work with a vise on the west end of the bench.

Pphht. A vanity project.
All that work on the carcase, and he used a door for the top. How are you supposed to true that up when it gets bunged? Composites are fine for a quickie makeshift with a sacrificial top (like my own bench redface.gif ), but a fancy piece like this needs a proper top.
The dog holes are too few and too far apart, for my taste, but it doesn't matter since there's no tail vise anyay. I think this is more of an "assembly table" than a real bench.

I'll throw my bench in just for fun. The top is made from an old bowling alley. Drawer fronts are walnut, most of the case is made from left over scraps from furniture and flooring. Tailvise is lacewood. First pic is at the woodworkers guild booth at the 2002 woodworking show. Last pic is the proof that I actually use it.

Oh Tom, that is nice.
Frankly too nice for me to be a user.
Said with tongue firmly in cheek.
Whose design did you use for the Tail Vice?
Have much trouble with the bowling alley slab/s?
Awhile back someone posted a series of photos in one of the Woodworking Binary Newsgroups of a bench similar to yours only that person used lathe turned Purpleheart for the Main Vice Screw and Nut! I just had to save those photos but, damn I forgot to save the makers name!
Again Nice Job and Enjoy!

Thanks guys. The tailvise I designed around the hardware. Took a lot of ideas from the workbench book. The rest of the top is pretty much Frank Klaus design. You can't see it in the pics but the back board for the tool tray is a great piece of birdseye maple that sat around the shop forever just waiting for the "right project". Decided it was time to treat myself. The bench is a great piece to show prospective clients because of all the different types of joinery and woods used in the construction. Mortise and tennons, sliding dovetails, breadboard ends, hand and machine cut dovetails veneered panels, etc...
The bowling alley was a bear to work with. Too many nails. I had no idea that was how they were built.

"Not only are the pieces nailed they are HARDENED and with SPIRAL FLUTED shanks."
They sure are. The good thing is they aren't glued together. I ended up prying the whole thing apart, removing any nails that would be in the way of joinery and reassembling with glue and nails. Took about 4 hours.
