View Full Version : Workshop near Manhattan?

I have half a plan to complete construction on a Haven 12.5 ... but I live in Manhattan, in an apartment.

I wondered whether anyone out there might have suggestions on where to look for workshop/storage space. At the least, I need a large enough indoor space with access to electricity. The hull is essentially complete, so at this stage the work is not too involved.

Anything on City Island? Sheepshead Bay? Long Island? There's a wooden boat building program out of Pier 40 on the west side, do they allow others to bring their vessels by?

Thanks,
Colin

Colin...there's alot to consider in looking for such a space, not the least of which is convenience in getting there. If it were me, I'd look on the New Jersey side, for empty warehouse space. I've rented warehouse space all around Manhattan, and can tell you that up until about 5 years ago (when I retired) ground floor warehouse space was plentiful and affordable in NJ. Long Island City would be my next choice. Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens warehouse areas are places you don't want to be at night, and Long Island is extremely expensive and inconvenient to get to.

Colin,
A thought - there were some guys a couple of years ago at the old Brooklyn Navy Yard (which now has all kinds of artists lofts, shops etc)who were working on a boatbuilding program for underprivileged kids-unfortunately, I don't remember the name or have much info otherwise, but perhaps something like that might work for you-you might also sniff around South Street Seaport, I doubt you could get any space there, but you might be able to find out some info on these guys in Brooklyn and perhaps others lurking in the shadows - if you look long enough and chat up the right waterfront characters, I'm sure you'll find something-you'd be surprised at how many woodworkers, boatbuilders and sailors are doing their thing within the confines of NYC..!

The place in the Brooklyn Navy Yard is "Maritime Workshop". Don't bother- it is basically a scam. One of the main people, I think his name is Fred, is pretty good but the rest of the operation is a classic case of what not to do to a nice boat. They have taken the skipjack Ethel Lewis, which was sailed there on it's own bottom, and pretty much turned it into junk. If anyone wants to save a piece of maritime history this boat is crying out for help.
