Hi everyone,
I'd like to order an owner's manual for the used 30 horsepower Johnson I recentley purchased and need to know the year which I can't find anywhere on the motor. The previous owner does not know the either. Does anyone know the best way to find this out?
Any help would be appreciated.

Chris I would hazard a guess that somewhere on the motor (probably the block) would be a block number. With this you can call the manufactur and they can tell you all you need to know. Do this with a cordless phone so you can be at the motor while talking to the manufactur and they can walk you through where to look.
When I re-built my '64 model chevy truck I didn't know anything about the engine. Called the chevy dealer and they told me where the block number was. I gave them this number and they told me my engine was a '67 chevy 230.

There should be a serial# or engine# on a plate somewhere on the motor. I'll bet that with one of those numbers, you can find the year it was manufactured right on the web.

Here's a really neat bit of outboard trivia. You can translate the motor's model# into it's date of manufacture and horsepower.
Johnson (now owned by Bombardier) uses the word "INTRODUCES" as the code for their model numbers.
For example:
The model # is J60ELCTB
J= Johnson
60= 60HP
EL= Electric start
C= 8 (8th letter in "introduces")
T= 3 (3rd letter in "introduces")
B= dunno what it means...maybe shaft length or tiller/console
So it's a 1983 electric start 60HP
