I am a redhead and fair skinned. I got my first "burn" of the season a week ago. In New Jersey I could get a tan but here I just reach various shades of red. The only sunblock that has ever worked for me has been
Aloe Gator, every other sunblock sweats off (including Bullfrog):

The only way to get it off is soap & water. It comes in SPF 15 & 40 but the only place I've ever seen it is in REI.

I'm a red head too. ( a bit gray now) What works for me is a big hat , sleeved shirts and to cover up as much as possible. Lots of goo on the rest , like hands, neck etc., even socks up high to cover exposed ankles. I even grew a beard for a recent Equatorial jaunt.
All precautions worked, no burns. :D
I'm constantly confounded by the number of beet red adults and children I see despite all the warnings and available safe guards.
