Anybody have a good source for cane? I'm restoring an old rocking chair, and I'd rather get good cane from a reliable and recommended source. Thanks!

The last few times I bought from HH Perkins the cane was short and buggy. Since then I found these people and I'm reasonably happy with their products:

I do a fair amount of caning, and I teach the process. Caning was and is very popular for furniture in the West Indies.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your taking the time. Any recommendations on which tools I'll need, and how many pegs to buy?

Buy pegs?? Stick the end of something like a 5/16" dowel in a pencil sharpener, then cut off, repeat. ;) Or, just whittle the end by hand, which is what I prefer because you can vary the taper & end up being able to choose ones that will stick better in the hole as they fill with cane. I've never needed more than half a dozen or so for a chair.

Thanks Ned, that's a good idea with the pencil sharpener.

Pegs? I use golf tees.

A few will do a simple chair with no curvature. Blind caning can require many more--one for every couple of holes isn't uncommon.

Good luck.

Thanks Rick. I picked up a used copy of The Caner's Handbook, so hopefully that's all I'll need.
