View Full Version : Hand Bearing Compass

While at WBS last summer, I saw someone with a pistol grip hand bearing compass, much like one Davis makes, but this one had a "trigger" that when squeezed, allowed one to lock down the compass to retrieve the reading. I thought it was pretty neat, but neglected to ask the person where they bought it. Anybody familiar with one of these or know where I can find one?
Thanks,
Ken

most hand bearing compasses work similarly...mine is a "hockey puck" and has a small button for the same reason....

Ken.
I have used one like that you mentioned.
However, have a pair of binocs with a compas inside. Use it more. Handier...the view is right there and the compas is lit for night work.

Thinking about cost as well as accuracy, I think you can't beat the hockey puck model. I bought one decades ago, well encased in a rubber shell,
with a lanyard. It will take a beating, and mine is still working, though the little green, no-battery light has long since gone dark. Checking it visually against known bearings --buoy to lighthouse, etc. -- the error is so small I can't see it. And it cost a fraction of the price of a fragile hand-held model.

Suunto Commander hand bearing compass. Try googling it because the URL is too long for me.
I have one, its useful as a steering compass as well. A bit expensive. I mostly use a compass in my binoculars for fixing sights.

There's talk about the next generation of binocks . They'll have GPS as well as a compass . Look at any mapped or charted object and they will give distance , bearing ,and text ID.

I have the steiner binocs with built in compass also, but the puck is easier to grab and use...
