View Full Version : Dolfinite in canada

Apparently it isn't available anymore, at least in BC and I assume Canada also. It is considered a hazardous material and can't be shipped. It did used to be available, West Marine has some left in their Sidney store but they can't even ship it to Vancouver now. You can get it in the US fine. I tried another marine store and got the same thing. Does anyone know what the whole story is? My hatch is still off while I try to get some of this to fix it properly. This is very annoying because I'm building a pram and wanted to use it for that also. Apparently Dolfinite is owned by Woolsey now and Woolsey is marketed under the Pettit name. I'd like to find who represents this product so I can find out how to get some.

I wonder if I order some over the internet from the US if the same shipping problems exist.

Talk to the manager at your local West Marine, they should be able to back order it into the store. Back orders are usually shipped to the store on the company truck, ordered this way there should be NO shipping charges. West will not ship anything hazardous directly to the customer, but will normally back order these items into the store for the customer to pick up.

FedEx won't ship hazardous, since it's going by air. UPS will ship by ground, but you may end up paying double. At shipments of paint etc. have this problem.

FYI Ken - I ordered through our local West and still ended up paying the hazardous materials shipping surcharge for Sterling/Crystal paint/varnish products.

Apparently a little red box pops up on the computer screen..... :(

This is the Oarlock & Sail Wooden Boat Club in Vancouver. I'd expect if it is possible these chaps would know someone.
Are you building clinker pram?
I'm just finishing one.

I'll try calling West Marine again then and see what they say. From the sounds of it they didn't want to even order it into the store and another marine store just said it's not available anymore which is clearly nonsense.

Yeah, I'm buliding Gartsides 7' clinker pram. I'm just finishing up the lofting.

Too funny, I buy red lead primer in Canada because I can't get it in Seattle. In Canada, you can't get Dolfinite. I would think Dolfinite would be much less toxic than red lead.

It sounds as if you need to head on down to Bellingham for a day trip. There is a marine supply (http://www.pacificmarine.com/) there with quite a bit of used stuff. I've heard you can find some real gems there.

Terry, maybe we should meet some time at the border and save on gas and border hassle. Do you have a good arm? You toss the Dolfinite, then go deep for the red lead.

I checked the computer today at West, there is NO restrictions on Dolfinite going into the Canadian stores. Go to the store and have them back order it into the store, you won't be able to have it shipped directly to you or place the order over the phone, but it can be delivered to the store. If they give you any crap tell them "it's showtime, engage the customer and sell him what he wants"
Margo, you should NOT have to pay hazard material charges if it is back ordered into the store.

Hi Ken,

I tried back ordering it from West but they said normally that is the procedure.. to back order it and bring it up on the truck. The woman told me that she can't even back order it (this is what her computer told her) and that it might not be allowed into canada. Now I have to call the Blaine or Bellingham store and see if they can back order it then go down (they have none in stock either).

Oooh - smuggling WMD (weapons of microbacterial destruction) across the border -- beware!

;- )

What does Dolphinite have in it that gets it Banned in Bamf? I was under the impression that you always wanted to combine it with red lead or other toxic substances to keep the wood from rotting.

I noticed that Dolfinite is now called "Dolphin" on the newer cans. Seems to be the same stuff, Fisheries has both cans on the shelf but could not answer anything about the name change.

Years ago, there was a product called Fungicidal Dolfinite but it had something like Pentacouldakilledya in it so was discontinued. We used to call it Suicidal Dolfinite, but I used it anyway. So far, so good. smile.gif http://www.ronlloyd.com/oddstuff/dolphin.jpg

Bruce, I'd have to agree with you. I emailed Pettit but they didn't bother to reply. Woolsey doesn't even have a web site so I have no idea who's taking care of the product.
