Does any body make a portable battery powered depth sounder that can be easily mounted and taken off the boat ?
I mean besides the lead line and sounding pole.

There are lots of options...depending on what you want to use it for.
You can buy a handheld unit that you stick into the water, and read the depth/bottom structure. They even make side-scanning versions of this model.
You can mount the transducer on almost any sounder to your boat, and just unplug it's lead and the power lead, to take the readout head off the boat.
Norcross makes a wireless unit. The 'ducer mounts semi-permanently, and you can read depth digitally, on in-dash or handheld readouts.
What are you going to do with it?

I've seen a unit which has a transducer and readout all in one... sort of short broomstick with clamps kind of affair.Clamp it on a gunwhale or transom. I don't have any other data to hand... just the fact that it exists.
Oh, one I saw at our local boat show last weekend made me laugh. The transducer is a small float. You tie it to your fishing line and cast it out. It sends a wireless message back to the readout so you can see if there are fish where you will cast.It struck me that you could make some expensive mistakes........

Donn,
I just want a continuous reading only as I approach shoal water. Maybe be on for 15 minutes at a time. The unit must be run on small flash light batteries, D or better yet AA. Simple to set up. Maybe like drop a tansducer down the CB trunk and clamp the read out near by.
John B, sounds like what I would like to see. Put the whole thing down the trunk and monitor the readings. :D
I never look at all the goodies in catalogs any more so pardon my ignorance.

JD...here's one of the units John spoke of. Runs on 3 c-cells, but you'll have to look at measurements to see if it'll fit down your CB trunk.

It's $170, an does more than you want. You could fashion your own with an under $100 unit. The only thing that has to be considered is the width of the transducer. If it's narrow enough to fit through the trunk, then you screw the 'ducer onto an appropriate length stick, and fasten the readout head to the top end of the stick, and used a spring clamp to hold it to the top of the CB trunk. They are almost all 12V, but you can put together a 12V power source easily, with whatever size batteries you desire.

Thanks Donn. Ya know my lead line and sounding pole looks pretty good after all , and I can handle the repairs or replacement.

Portable depth finders are out there. I have an older Humminbird that runs on 2-6 Volt lantern batteries and mounts with a suction cup. It does OK, certainly not the most sensitive unit out there though. One thing to do though, since a portable unit's transducer dries out between uses is to smear about 1 drop of dish detergent on the face of the transducer before you submerge it. This wets the face and eliminates bubbles. This gets it reading quickly, otherwise you need to let it take its' merry ol' time til it decides to wet-up and start reading.

And now for something completely different.
Humminbird has come up with a portable fish finder that you cast like a lure. It remotely sends back the image.
I think if you were moving dead slow and had it tied to a pole out say 16 feet in front of you it might find the rocks in time for you to stop.

Just a thought.

It says they're only $20, though I didn't see a price on the entire unit. They should just put a couple of hooks and a rubber skirt on the sensor. Remember the "Heddon Sonar" fishing lure? Well this one could be the real thing!
