View Full Version : Help - Where can I get small quantities of mahogany?

I build half models of boats. Most of my clients want their models mounted on varnished mahogany boards. Lately my local lumber suppliers have quit carrying mahogany. Sure they will order it for me - if I order a hundred board feet. However, I generally only need 6 to 8 feet of 1x12 at a time. That has become next to impossible to get.
So, does anyone have any thoughts about where I can get small quantities of mahogany. I am in downeast Maine, but am willing to mail order the stuff.

There are surely suppliers closer to you but I deal with Wall Lumber in NC. They ship in small or large quantity.

Portland - man that is the other side of the world. Not sure you can get there from here - ;)
I live in Bass Harbor. I have a friend in Freeport who might be willing to pick it up for me though.
thanks

Try these fine New Hampshire folks. Give em a call and ask if they would ship small quantities to Maine.

You'll pay a premium price but you can certainly order such from http://www.constantines.com/
Many of the lumber places that advertise in WoodenBoat will ship.
You can also check http://www.wdfinder.com for places that will ship.
For UPS shipments you may have to limit yourself to pieces that are 8 feet long or less (I believe the limit is length + girth cannot exceed 130"), but it sounds like that should not be an issue for you.

I'd think that some of the local boat yards might have some off cuts that they'd sell you. You might also try a cabinet shop if there are any near you. I almost always have board ends kicking around after a job. Eventually they get used for something, but if someone comes by looking for a piece before I make Christmas presents, I usually give them away (the customer of the original project already paid for the wood anyway...).

How far away is the Windsor Chair Company in Lincolnville Beach on U.S. 1? They buy hardwood from a firm in New Hampshire (name escapes me). You might be able to piggy back your wood with one of their orders. Or get off cuts as has been suggested earlier. However, their main species are maple (curly & tiger), cherry & walnut. Too bad, huh?
Here's a thought, free for nothing. Wean your clients away from questionable rain forest products and steer them toward domestic hardwoods. Cherry or walnut are gorgeous! Be GREEN!
Did you call Maine Coast Lumber? They deliver as far as Bar Harbor and Bangor. 1-800-899-1664

What Doug(lefty) said. If all you are looking for is short pieces, look around. An honest approach to most cabinet/millwork shops will turn up a veritable plethora of off cuts.
Christ, they've been building fancy houses on the coast of Maine like kingdom come, for twenty years. If a little judicious hunting doesn't turn up some usable offcuts I'm Tinkerbell.

'Dumpster Dive' at a high end boat yard... or a manufacturer of quality boats.
You would be amazed, what Davis Yachts in Manteo, NC, throw away!
Now guys, don't you go causing a traffic jam to the Outer Banks, trying to get to Roanoke Island! ;)
