I have been looking in every catalog I have and all over to internet to no avail.

I am trying to find some non-magnetic hinges, i.e., brass, bronze or stainless steel.

This is necessary as the compass will be close by.

I am trying to find some non-mortising hinges (like are used on bifold doors)

Does anyone know of a source?

Thanks

Alan, I looked in the Fisheries catalog and found Perko hinges , non mortised crome plated brass 7/8 x 3-3/8" Perko # PKO 957DPC There are also any number of other hinges in plastic stainless and injected molded nylon fiberglass with stainless pins.
The other option might be to use piano hinges which come in aluminum, stainless or polished brass. These can be cut to any length you want. I think all this is avaiable at Jamestown Distributors as well.

Thanks everyone for the leads. Gary, the Perko hinge is exactly what I was looking for.

Now I just need to see if any of the retail outlets will order just a few.

Alan - for stuff like this I always go to McMaster Carr - http://www.mcmaster.com/ - search for hinges and you will find every type in a wide variety of materials. They ship UPS the same day to anybody with a credit card. Good luck. Gary

Gary, thanks. The Perko hinge is just what I was looking for. I especially appreciate the tip on Fisheries Supply.

None of the other marine supply catalogs stocked this particular hinge.

Looks like Fisheries Supply will be useful for all kinds of things.

Why don't you go to Home Depot. Look for a hinge you like in SOLID brass. Buy one. Take it home but don't take it out of its wrapping. Wave it around your compass. If the compass doesn't budge buy as many more like it as you need. If it does budge, return it for cash or credit.

ahp: I had the same idea. What I found was that vitually all of their hinges look like brass but are actually brass plated steel.

But luckily, Fisheries Supply had what I needed.

Occasionally you'll find brass hinges with steel pins. These are pretty hard to spot, because you only see them end-on, ground flush with the brass, and usually shiny. Taking a magnet with you when you go to buy them is definitely a good idea.

On the other hand, I've never seen a bronze hinge that had anything but a bronze pin -- it might be worthwhile checking your local foundry.

.
And here's another thing I mention in case it's relevant in your situation. Should you be wanting to fit a brass bolt like this one, it pays to know that the bolt carries a hidden spring-loaded ball bearing designed to put sideways pressure on the bolt to stop it from rattling. The ball and the spring are invariably steel, and you will need to remove them. You do this by unscrewing the knob from the bolt, then sliding the bolt out of the housing. When you hear a sproinnng you'll know that the spring and ball have self-ejected.
