View Full Version : Velcro for Holding Must Have Items?

Hi all,

I am trying to find a way to have easy access to my handhelds (gps, vhf, cell phone) and other equipment (rigging knife, flashlight, sail ties, etc) in my wooden knockabout sloop. I am thinking of glue-ing velcro ties just inside the house to hold these items. I don't want them glued to the outside (cockpit side) of the house because it's bright mahogany.

Does this sound feasible (for day sails) and if so, what kind of glue should I use to attach the velcro straps? Thanks!

How about making something up out of canvas that can hang on the inside of the bulkhead and that has pockets in it for the various key items. For me at least, glued on velcro just never seems to last very long...

I just realized that maybe you are talking about straps that you can just wrap around the key items. I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind -- it seems like it would be a bit hard to get a velcro strap to hold things like a rigging knife, but if this is the plan, and if you therefore only need to attach the velcro to the bulkhead, not the items you need to hold to the bulkhead, then I would use flat head wood screws and finish washers, run right through the straps. Still, I think that a canvas "organizer" would be easier to use and more versitile.

I use velcro strips to hold the seats in my dory and to hold the table legs under the fore deck on Floozie when not in use the strips come with an adhesive backing you just cut them to the length you need and stick them on . smile.gif smile.gif ....Phil

I use Velcro a lot and found that Contact cement works for me.

Thanks, guys. Bruce - yes, it is simply to hold things w/a velcro strap. I just wanted something that would be quick to get to and easy to assemble. I'm not very handy. The canvas "itemizer" is a good idea, but I'm not sure I could find something that would hold an air horn down to the size of a rigging knife.

In the past, I've carried the stuff in a waterproof bag but it isn't very handy - the one item you need will invariably sink to the bottom of the bag when you most need it.

I'm kind of a neat freak and I'd like to have definitive places for each item so that it would be second nature to reach for it if needed. I don't have any cockpit storage/lazarettes, etc.

If you want odd sized pockets, then why not make your own canvas orgainzer. The pattern would be simple to make, the stiches could be done by any house hold sewing machine. Hardly rocket science.

I use small net hammocks...port and starboard under the side decks right by the companionway bulkhead, they are perfect for that small stuff.

Katherine - perhaps not rocket science but more effort than I want to put into it.

CanoeYawl - great idea. I'll look into it. Thanks!

To strengthen the velcro, have your wife sew it to some webbing or canvas to backup the velcro. Contact cement is an excellent strong, water proof glue. You can buy it in a little bottle with a brush builtinto the lid at the hardware store.

Put some on both surfaces and wait a few minutes for it to dry some or completely and push it together. In 24 hours, it won't be going anywhere. This is pretty much the same stuff they use to glue your formica down with.

If you want to take it off, you will have to do some major pulling and sanding. For what you want, I'd say a dime sized pattern will do.

Pictured above is a carry on bag I take and mount athwartships under the tiller aboard myday sailer "Carrianne" On the left is the carrying handle. In it from L to R VHF radio, Binoculars Digital camera and am/fm radio. Contact cement holds the velcro on and closes the bag.
