View Full Version : 1/2 " vinyl rubrail source
My 18 foot skiff is almost finished and the rubrail is made from walnut scarffed before installation. My choices for the finishing protection material are 1/2 inch stainless half round or aluminum (pre drilled). The stainless will cost me almost $ 300.00. I would be totally satisified with black vinyl half round (1/2" width) but have not been able to find anything that thin. The outside edge of my rubrail is 3/4" wide so I really want to apply a protection strip that is only 1/2 inch in width. Any sources would be appreciated...

How about some three-twist rope screwed to the rubrail for a more traditional effect? Cost is certainly low. You can open the rope with a fid, put a screw through the inner twist into the rubrail, then shake the rope back into shape so the screw won't show. Given the relatively small rope size, though, I'd experiment on scrap to be sure the screw would hold. You might secure the rope every foot or so. Rich Kolin showed me this at a class I took, though he had routed out the rubrail beforehand to make a space for the rope to fit.

Yep, that's exactly what I am doing on my LILY. I get the idea from Rich Kolin and just glued on the routed rubrail 2 days ago. I'll be using 3/4" rope. Canvas covered rubrail is darned pricey too. Rick
