I have three great looking shell blocks that have Maltese crosses on their little cover plates. I wonder if anyone here knows who made them and where. Thanks.

Thad,

I found no information on a manufacturer, but I wonder if it is indicative of a manufacturing standard. The link below references "vessels," but it appears to be used a bit more broadly.

Maltese Cross ( X ) A-1 the designation used by ABS which signifies that a vessel has met the classification requirements of that agency.Marine Terms (http://www.erlinc.net/new_page_2.htm)

Might, Wiley, but the plates are all the same pattern suggesting the same source. One of these blocks is an all teak shell fiddle block (figure 8 shape with a smaller sheave below a bigger); the other two both have Lignum V. sides with ?ash? spacers, one a double the other a single with becket, these have split hooks. All the sheaves are bronze just under 2". The plates are only on one side covering one end of each shaft.

Thad, I don't think they're good for much, but if you send them my way I'll be glad to have a look. ;)
